SOUND OFF: Does “I’m On A Boat” Getting A Nod Make The Grammys a Joke?

Should comedy songs be in the same category as regular music.

It seems some people are a bit upset by the song “I’m On A Boat” (video below) getting a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Why are people upset? It’s because most people know “I’m On A Boat” as a short on SNL. Even though the song, which features T-Pain is a catchy tune, it’s basically a comedy bit. A rap song about literally being “on a boat”.

Though it first came onto most people’s radar a an SNL short, the song is actually a track on Andy Samburg‘s group Lonely Island’s album Incredibad (as is other songs made into shorts for SNL such as the popular D*ck In A Box). And if it is an actual album, that means it can technically get a Grammy. The question is whether a song that is obviously meant to be seen as comedy really be in the same category with Jay-Z’s Run This Town and T. I.’s Dead And Gone?

Recently Robert Downy Jr. was nominated for an Oscar for his “blackface” performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder. Though some claimed that Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence never got Oscar nods for dressing up in fat suits so Downy shouldn’t get a nod for dressing up as a black guy. However, most felt that Downy was indeed good enough to deserve consideration even though it was a comedy performance. Does the same apply to “On A Boat”? Is it that good of a song, that it can not just be looked as a a comedy piece? Is rapping about being on a boat any different than Gucci Mane, a serious rapper, making a song about how everything he owns is the same color as lemonade?

Sound Off Nation, Is “I’m On A Boat” Grammy worthy or has the Grammys officially jumped the shark and lost all creditability?

  1. Thought I’d also share a new SNL short featuring Rihanna and Andy Samburg. Maybe this one will get a Grammy next year ;)

Is it not a referendum on Hip Hop? I mean its saying there isn’t anything else more entertaining or skilled that they’d nominate a spoof. Sad state. Hip Hop 2.0 should be embarrassed while the Highbrid Nation smh.

  4. This isn’t too far from what Hip Hop is already putting out. How many tracks does T-Pain appear on and you think WTF are they singing about? Teddy Pet Her Ass or however the song goes.
    .
The Grammy’s awards comedy albums. Would this be a better fit for that category instead?
    .
When Hip-Hop reaches outside the construct of what it was initially, this is what you end up with.

Reminds me of how Weird Al took to Michael Jackson.

    I agree with Urban…

This is why Hov made DOA…it’s a gimmick! That sh!t is corny! There are real artists out here who cant get local radio play and this trash gets a Grammy nod?
It’s nothing but another form of rape…

  6. Left eye says:

I don’t know about this getting a grammy nod but it’s better than alot of BS out there. and it is all about entertainment. I say, if they win, let them enjoy it. It’s entertainment. If other artists can’t get nominated…get over it or find another source of income. Quit your bitching.
