SAY WORD! The Vatican Digs 2Pac

Posted by Juan

The Vatican’s very exclusive MySpace playlist surprisingly includes 2pac’s “Changes” among 11 other classic records.

Tupac Praying

So get this, much to the shagrin of many, a song from late, great Tupac Shakur appeared on the the Vatican’s official MySpace Music playlist.  The California emcee’s inspirational single “Changes,” which appeared on his 1998 Greatest Hits album made its way onto a very selective list of only 12 records that also included selections from Mozart, Muse and Dame Shirley Bassey.

Why the Vatican has a MySpace page is beyond me but its kind of cool and definately a sign of the times and the desire for institutions, even as old as the Holy City to feel the need to assimilate to the advancing technology.

“The genres are very different from each other, but all these artists share the aim to reach the heart of good minded people,” the Vatican wrote on its official MySpace Music page.

The complete list was actually compiled by Father Giulio Neroni who is the quazi music director of the Vatican and is also responsible for compiling the Vatican’s recent Alma Mater album, which combined Gregorian chants and prayers with classical music and the voice of Pope Benedict XVI speaking in five languages.  While he’s clearly well versed in the religious hymns, its good to see he’s got his iPod tuned to some Pac as well.

  1. dont be surprised if Pac suddenly disappears off the list now that people are noticing.

  2. First Pope John Paul II hosts polish break dancers, and now this. I’m glad the catholic church is progressing to appeal to a younger audience.

that just goes to show that hip hop has just as much influence as any other genre of music..it’s up to the artists whether that influence is a good or a bad one

  4. Malcolm says:

I can just picture the pope, with his grill in, wearing a baggy habit, drinking Cristal from the bottle, dancing along with the tunes.

  5. 4pl says:

“Changes” is a very powerful song addressing poverty, war, diseases etc. If you listen to the lyrics you would realize it very quickly. Combined w/a popular song sample and its not that big of a surprise. One of my favorite Pac Joints

  6. Meranda says:

Well, Praise the Lord for that. 2Pac was an amazing Spiritual person and he should be recognized. RIP, 2Pac
