Serena Williams Sets Season Prize Money Record, Can’t Keep Up With A Rod

Posted by Juan

Despite raking in $6.5 million, her acheivment is dwarfed by the money men are making in other major sports

Serena Williams

After winning the season-ending tour championships Sunday, beating older sister Venus in the final, Serena Williams cemented her No. 1 year end ranking.  But in doing so she set the single-season record for prize winnings in women’s tennis history when she went over the $6.5 million in 2009.  She broke the previous mark of $5.5 million set by Justine Henin in 2007.

In comparison, Alex Rodriquez currently makes a guaranteed $27.5 million.  which almost matches Serena’s record $28.5 million career earnings.  He’s the best in one of the most lucrative sports you say?  Well this year the very obscure Vernon Wells made $18 million dollars nearly triple that of Williams record year salary and many casual baseball fans couldn’t tell you what position he plays and for what team.

  1. Its a shame that women in sports still cant make the money that men do. Especially since when it comes to tennis Serena could easily beat most male professionals
