Is Homosexuality Still A Bad Word?

Posted by Juan

Is the gay ‘stigma’ still as damaging as it was 15 years ago?

Magic

The most cynical conspiracy-theorizing critics of the entertainment industry have long accused the business for being incestuous.  They believe the rapid ascension of many of the industry’s top stars was a byproduct produced in the wake of sexual favors.  Most recently those accusations have turned to a deeper darker belief a homosexual secret society linked to many entertainment and sports industry power brokers, many with hip hop ties.  But homosexuality is no longer taboo.  Its no longer a scarlet letter from which to hide and in as we’ve seen some have actually forged their sexuality in the reverse to get ahead.

So its not surprising that more and more celebrities are essentially coming out of the closet or being exposed by scorned former associates.  The effects are far less damaging to a career. Take the all but discredited and obviously desperate Bobby Brown.  The former New Addition band member now claims that his ex-wife Whitney Houston made the decision to marry him in part to then rumors that she was a lesbian.

“(The marriage) was doomed from the very beginning,” Brown writes in his new tell-all book “Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But…” “I think we got married for all the wrong reasons. Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married… I believe her agenda was to clean up her image, while mine was to be loved and have children.”

“The media was accusing her of having a bisexual relationship with her assistant, Robin Crawford. Since she was the American Sweetheart and all, that didn’t go too well with her image… In Whitney’s situation, the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation, whether it was true or not.”

Its been two years since Brown divorced Houston after a 14 year tumultuous relationship riddled with drugs and drama. Recently Houston revealed some of the damage done by the Brown during an exclusive interview with Oprah.  While the speculation then some 15 years ago would have been damaging for her career, such a rumor would simply be a byline.

Another 80′s era icon,  NBA star,  Earvin “Magic” Johnson faced many viscious homosexual rumors after he announced he was HIV+.   was homosexual or bisexual .

In his new book, “When The Game Was Ours” about the Lakers-Celtics-Pistons rivalry of the late 1980s and early ’90s, Magic is finally admitting he was crushed by the rumors especially those spread by those he called friends.

“Isiah [Thomas] kept questioning people about it. … The one guy I thought I could count on had all these doubts. It was like he kicked me in the stomach,” Magic says in the book, which will be released Nov. 4 and is co-written with Larry Bird and author Jackie MacMullan.

Isiah Thomas denies the charge, telling SI.com, “I’m really hurt, and I really feel taken advantage of for all these years. I’m totally blindsided by this. Every time that I’ve seen Magic, he has been friendly with me.”

Thomas added, “I didn’t know he felt this way.” But now that he knows, is such a rumor wrong OR RIGHT damage an individual celebrity’s career?  What do you think?  Is homosexuality still a bad word?   Its ironic that of the two given examples both Thomas and Brown have both themselves been linked to homosexuality and/or bisexuality.

There are so many skeletons in so many closets out there in Hollywood and in NYC, it’s ridiculous….it’s the nature of the beast…many of these famous people sell their souls to get where they are, gay or not…even though the gay stigma is not as damning as it was in the past, it still hurts in the endorsement world and in the autograph/motivational speaking tours… as well as in circles outside of the “celebrity rounds” (with family/friends)…
.
Aside from that, guys like Magic, Jordan, Tiger, Lebron, even Isiah, can’t have “normal” relationships with regular people anymore… I knew two former NBA players personally, since high school…they’re “analysts” now…last time I saw them, individually, they greeted me the same as you greet a “fan”. I’m not a fan of these guys, we used to play ball back in the day. I’m no groupie or member of an entourage. Just saying “whassup, long time no-see, bruh” … but I can sort of understand where they are now, seems like everybody wants something from “celebrities.” seems like it. Some of us are not in awe. Just wanted to say, “whassup”.

I heard a rumor about another NBA player. His nickname is the same as a popular soul food bread item. And the rumor came from a reliable source. But I don’t think it’s our business. I believe that the Bible is right when it condemns that lifestyle, but all people deserve respect. I can’t preach to people unless I’m following the Bible myself. And I’m not doing that well to begin with. So, I just show love to people. If you show people love, they’ll love you right back. There’s no need for mean words or putting folks down. Just love them and they’ll hear you out. (But not in THAT way)

Come on Zack, gone with the blind item. Spill the beans. Hot Water Cornbread is all I can come up with. Help a brotha out on this one.

when talking about this issue, we must remember that queen Latifah came out the closet recently and it received a mixed reception from everyone, in a masculine society like basketball or rap something viewed as even slightly feminine will be looked down upon and people take the bible out of context to say it condones the killing of gays, which is not true in the new testament and in Islam homosexuality is forbidden, so for homosexuality to truly be accepted in modern day society, people need to rethink what they view as morally acceptable

and i think that it depends on the person, because while Latifah came out the closet and received mainly support, when basketball player John Amaechi came out the closet he received mainly negative responses, but i think that the gay stigma can still be very damaging due to how the media (mainly CNN, Fox News etc.) tends to portray people who don’t resemble them (eg. Black people)

John Amaechi received a negative response because he had no game all jokes aside. He had no fan base so there was no one to support him other than the gay community which would have done so anyway. It makes it tough for a guy like that.
