RZA Hints At Possible Ol’ Dirty Bastard Biopic. Is There Room For Another?
Says a Wu-Tang movie could be on the horizon as well. What ever happend to old fashion biographies?
Wu-Tang czar, Rza has always had his hands in several different projects outside of the music studio. In addition to producing the upcoming remake of the 80′s cult-smash The Last Dragon, starring in a new Jamie Foxx comedy and making his directorial debut in the movie, The Man With The Iron Fist, Shaolin’s own tells The AV Club there’s room for even more on his plate.
The Abbott says there have been extensive talks behind the scenes about the production of a Ol’ Dirty Bastard bio-flick.
“We have talked about it,” Rza said. “His estate is pretty confused, like any estate is in our country. The estate is kind of confused on what to do, and all the rights and all that shit, but it’s definitely been talked about. There’s also been talk about a Wu-Tang Clan movie. So we’ll see what life brings.”
While Biopic are all the rage now with the success of projects such as Notorious and Walk The Line but understanding what attracts the audience to the story is important.
“In my opinion, I’d rather see an ODB pic than a Wu-Tang Clan pic, because Wu-Tang is still alive, and may be active for a few more years,” Rza explains. “But an ODB pic, just to really describe his life, would be good. Right now, there is a documentary that’s done that’s pretty good. It ain’t a knock out of the park, but it’s pretty good, it gives a nice piece of him. Then you start with that, and we can build more awareness about his life, and build more interest in people seeing a movie about it.”

I guess its really a product of our diminishing patients but for generations we’ve had these biopics…there were called BIOGRAPHIES…in book form. The On-Demand, iPod, Playstation 3000 generation has required everything to be set to moving images and available at your fingertips. The problem with it as RZA alludes to however is that its difficult to sum the life of anyone worth producing a biography for in a 2-3 hour movie and still keep the audience engaged. There undoubtedly will be conflicting stories, allegations of exaggeration and inaccuracies all because to sell a movie unlike a book sensationalizing is almost a requirement. While I’m a HUGE movie fan and actually appreciate some of the biopics that have recently been released, I think there’s a fine line and if they begin to flood the market in the same vain as reality TV we’ll ruin forever. That said, if done right….an Dirty bioflick could be COMEDY!
