A Run DMC Bio-Musical? Why Broadway and Hip Hop Clash

Posted by Juan

Group in the development stages of adapting their story for the big stage

Run DMC

Former United Artist executive Paula Wagner is teaming up on a new original musical with Run-DMC.  According to Variety, the play will dramatize the not only the groups unlikely journey but also depict the untimely death of group member Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell.

“I feel their story lends itself perfectly to the stage,” Wagner said, according to Variety. “This project has been a passion of mine for some time and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with them.”

The surviving member, Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels have reportedly been working with Wagner in New York to scout other musicals currently on Broadway and see how they’ll adapt their story for the big stage.

A Run DMC play though?!  You know how we do here at Highbrid Nation we question EVERYTHING.  I’m obviously not privy to the planning of the project but something about Broadway just doesn’t lend itself to Hip Hop.  Hip Hop is a culture of imperfections, strategic disorganization…a far cry from the precise, razor sharp synchronization of a Broadway play let alone a musical.  They’re designed to over-dramatize the depicted events which could be challenging for a culture that prides itself on the details being understated.  I’m cautiously optimistic.
