50 Cent Finally Celebrates 40 Day in Jamaica, Queens Schoolyard
As part of a community event originally scheduled for august but canceled amid security concerns
On Saturday, 50 Cent celebrated “40 Day” in his former hood as promised albeit a little bit late. The Queens native silenced critics by performing for hundreds of fans at Public School (P.S.) 40 in his old Jamaica, Queens stomping grounds.
The performance was part of a community festival which had been scheduled for August but was canceled in part due to New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg‘s security concerns.
“Next year I’m gonna get to do it on the actual date that I want, when they see this as a successful event they won’t give me such a hard time next time,” he said.
The rare performance spoke to a frequent criticism of the rapper from rivals that he’s never publicly visible and is heavily fortified by a police backed army. While he was certainly accesable to the public, there was heavy police presence to ensure order.
“I ain’t never seen this before,” said 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson. “That’s the mother fucking police, you see them up there, now everybody wave.”
“You might as well come down and party with us, because we’re not going to be doing anything else,” he said sarcastically extending an invite.
50′s performance lasted about a half an hour and performed hits such including “In Da Club,” “What up Gangsta” and “I Get Money.”
“I’m back in my neighborhood, it feels good. I’m full of positive energy…I see a lot of familiar faces I ain’t seen in awhile,” he said.
50 hopes to make the performance an annual occurrence as a demonstration that hip hop can be peaceful.
