[RANT] What We Missed Because of Kanye’s Media Whoring Spree

Posted by Juan

Why its not what we see Kanye do but what we don’t

Kanye @ MTV Awards

Believe me I’ve spent more time thinking about Kanye West this week than I’d care to admit.  He’s been all over the news, late night talk shows, water cooler convos and the punchline of every joke.  Even former President Jimmy Carter weighed in on his antics at a recent talk that he gave at Emory University in Atlanta.

What I began to realize it has started to become not about what we see Kanye do but rather what now we DON’T SEE when he does it.  Yo Check it.  I actually missed the original broadcast of the MTV awards when it first aired earlier this week.  But last night I had a chance to watch it on TiVo.  What I realized is that unlike BET, MTV did an OUTSTANDING job of honoring my man Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson’s tribute was one of the most emotional and historic performances in music history but all of that was upstaged by Kanye and his antics.

Now I won’t get into name calling.  I’ll leave that for the Nation.  It was wrong, whatever, move on.  But Kanye, whether calculated or not is a media whore and distracts the cameras, anchors and writers from what’s truly important.  THE NEWS.  What is new about Kanye being a “Jackass” as Obama was quotes as saying?  That’s not NEWS?  Ask Kanye.  He’d probably agree with that.  But when he goes on Jay Leno’s World Premier of his new late night variety show he steels the spotlight from his mentor Jay-Z who was trying to promote his new album.  Instead of Leno chopping it up with Jay about his new project, he instead sits there and cries while Leno scolds him like an 8 year old.  What’s news about that?  What did the audience learn?  He’s sorry?  We already knew that.

Kanye @ Leno

I equate Kanye to racism and temper tantrums.  More often then not when you pay attention to them, you fuel them.  People need to stop treating this dudes every spazz out as a national event.  He’s a dick move on.  As a matter of fact I’ve spent too much time on him already.  I’m done.

  1. And I cannot believe I spent my time reading it. I kid. I kid.

But yeah, I was feeling the tribute she did. I was just a little disappointed that I clocked it at 2:30 seconds. Or was it shorter than that?

I wanted more. But MTV did their thing. They had a lot more time to come up with something — BET did not.

    Well. Done. MTV.

    • Honestly I wanted a lot more out of the tribute. I feel like MTV should do like a whole tribute show considering what MJ and MTV have always meant for each other. The tribute they did I thought was cool. Did anyone else notice Diddy favorite chair target Laurie Ann was one of the dancers?

      • B.E.B. says:

Yeah I noticed her too! I had paused it and showed my wife and sure enough it was Laurie! She did good, not many people can say they did a tribute for MJ on live t.v. As for Kanye, Juan you are right. He is a media whore and as long as the media gives in and places the spotlight on him, he’ll never cease. We should Boycott anything Kanye related. Juan can you make that happen?

        • Juan says:

hmmmm *gets out to do list* ruin…Kanye’s….life. Ok got it. lol.
          .
Aight I like that. The aformentioned is on a 2 Month suspension. Any Highbrid Employee who mentions him on Highbrid Nation will also be suspended until the afomentioned’s suspension is lifted. (As if I had the power.) I’m going to start a Twitter campaign too similar to the #unfollowdiddy campaign. #BoycottKanye.

      • I thought that was her. But she looked so hard in the face. Good to know I wasn’t off base.

I’ve never known ‘Ye to be a Beyonce lover/supporter in the 1st place. Now whether he learned somethin (prior to or afterward) the whole nomination thing/awards show or whatever, that remains to be seen/heard. Just dont make sense as to why would he do that anyway. Dude came to the show grippin a henny bottle so he ddnt really give 2 sh*ts about what was goin on anyway. (thats a first seeing something like that for me.) Its obvious (to me) he knew something we ddnt about the whole thing. Or someone put him up to it to be a distraction for other things happening or goinz on in this world of ours. Its interesting how things like this always happen and something just so happens to slip by the public eye. Bill, Monica and a cigar. Michael and the little accusatory kids and their money hungry parents. Mike and his wrestling dogs. OJ. The list goes on people. Its kinda like a magic trick. the build up. the “trick”. the distraction from whats really happening right under your nose. right in front of your face even! And then its over and we go back to our lil, petty lives. Just waiting and salivating for the next trick. When in fact, the trick is….us.

Three comments: first musical, then Kanye, then political:
    .
The video: Watching the video made me think of how much work must go into these productions. Not only was the sound balanced real nice for computer speakers; but the cameras and cuts (which are never accident) were really well done to give the impression of him dancing a duet with his sister and MJ lording large over everyone on the big screen in the back.
    .
Kanye: I have a friend who’s a big MJ fan. She says it’s not that complicated: Kanye wants to be the next king of pop, he’s pissed because it isn’t going to happen, and then they’re rubbing his nose in it with the over-the-top MJ tribute.
    .
Political: I’ll go one further on your ‘it’s what you’re not seeing’ theory.
    .
In white house politics terminology, there is ‘taking out the trash’ date. This is a late Friday night or early Saturday morning when they release really bad news hidden in a pile of otherwise boring announcements. Stories that would otherwise be big news go unnoticed as the reporters try to finish up their work before the weekend; and the pol’s can say that they released the info like they’re supposed to.
    .
For years I have been testing a theory that whenever a big media event happens (like Kanye, or MJ passing, or a child falling into a well), it’s open season where pols (and companies) can release the REALLY bad news they’re been holding back.
    .
The bigger the distraction, the worse the news.

    • In this over-saturated new society does anything really go unnoticed? I’m sure someone it taking notice.

There are those who care not to follow politics and then there are those who keep their ear to the grown until something crawls in it, wiggles around a bit and dies.
