Rev. Run & Wife Justine’s Kid Raising Self Help Book Hits Shelves

Posted by Juan

“Take Back Your Family” shares how couple raises six kids in a world of videogames, bad TV and divorce.

For those of you who are fans of Rev. Run and his wildly successful “Run’s House” Franchise on MTV you already know that he and his wife Justine Simmons have been working on a self-help book for struggling parents.  During several episodes of the show last season, the couple brought viewers behind the scenes of the writing process of “Take Back Your Family: How to Raise Respectful & Loving Kids in a Dysfunctional World.

Although depicted as a hokey sidebar storyline for several episodes of their reality show, the book is intended to be an honest look into the couple’s life through their fight to raise their six children in a world of videogames, bad TV and divorce.

“I believe something is taking your family from you; if you look at the divorce rate, nobody’s eating together anymore. I wanted to make a bold statement,” said Run.

As for Justine, she insists being involved in your children’s lives while sharing open communication is most important.

“We are constantly in their lives, trying to find out what they’re doing, what they wanna do.”

Follow the jump for an excerpt from the book.

“If this book can serve any purpose in your life, hopefully it will be as a reminder that there’s truly nothing out there that you can’t take your family back from. Drugs aren’t that strong. Drinking isn’t that strong. The TV isn’t that strong. The video games aren’t that strong.

The peer pressure isn’t that strong. The rappers, the rock stars, and the cover girls aren’t that strong. The dudes on the corner aren’t that strong. Your family’s dysfunctional history isn’t that strong… You can take back your family from whatever or whoever has gotten too much control over it. And when you are finally back in the driver’s seat, and God’ is your navigator, there’s no limit to how far your family can go, and how much fun you can have along the way!”

When “Sucker MC’s” hit, I was a teenager, growing up in NYC. Since then, I’ve seen the development of RUN-DMC into an industry icon, as well as the rise and deterioration of Rap. I don’t watch much “reality” tv, but have watched “Run’s House” and I’m happy (and even proud) to see Run mature into the man that he is. I’ll buy the book, read it and pass it on.
