Iowa 911 Now Accepting Calls Via Text
Not only tech cool but practical as well
Residents of Black Hawk County, Iowa now have more than one option when calling for fire, police, or an ambulance. As of this week thier emergency call center will begin accepting texts! The pioneering developement is said to not only be a cool tech savvy advancement but also provide a more practical means of emergency communciation for the deaf and hard-of-hearing residents who until now have had to rely on the more cumbersome TDD devices.
Unlike voice calls, however, the 911 operator can not as yet trace your location from the text message, which means the caller must actually respond to a request for their city or zip code before the call gets routed. The service is currently, only available through i wireless (a local T-Mobile affiliate) but the plan is to open it up to all cariers very soon.
