Russell Simmons talks about “Giving Back”
Giving is just as if not more important than receiving!
I’ll admit Hamptons Magazine is not the one of the publications I usually grab while reading magazines for free standing up in Barnes & Nobles or Borders, but July’s issue did grab my attention when I saw an article about Russell Simmons and philanthropic efforts. Simmons has gone from hip-hop mogul to philanthropic giant and explains to Hamptons Mag why its so important and fun for him to give back.”It’s a cycle of giving…. the more you get, the more you give, so its humbling. People like being able to play a good role.”
Simmons also reflects on the state of the economy, how that effects charities, and how his organization Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation overcomes these hurdles. “All charities are struggling a little bit right now. When people stop giving, it’s good to remind them that just because you lost money in the market that day doesn’t mean you stop giving to the poor.” It doesn’t hurt when your neighborhood is home to some of the richest and most influential people in the world. “It’s nice to be around people you’re partners with and friends with,” he says. “It’s a great place for charity. There are a lot of wealthy people and good organizations. People like being able to play a good role.”
This year Simmons Art for Life Garden Party Benefit will be held in East Hampton at his estate and will benefit his foundation which helps disadvantaged youth connect with art programs. The Gala is in its 10th yr, and aside from all the money it raises is one of the hottest tickets in town. I’m checking the mailbox right now for my invite.
