City of Los Angeles Panhandling For Jackson Memorial
“Can you please spare some change?”
There’s no secret while the country’s economy might be in the toilet, one of its crown jewels, the city of Los Angeles virtually broke. So its safe to say the estimated $4 million cost to the city to host the Michael Jackson Staples Center memorial came at a bad time.
But in a city chock full of celebrity and fame one might find it interesting that the Mayor’s office Tuesday launched a website designed to solicit donations via PayPal of all services to help offset the cost of the service.
And while the donations are no doubt, tax-deductible isn’t it quite tacky for one of our signature city’s to be panhandling for change?
The website which you can peep here reads as follows:
“Help the City of Angels provide the extraordinary public safety resources required to give Michael the safe, orderly and respectful memorial he deserves.”
While the AEG/ Staples Center hosted the event, the city is required to ensure public safety and deter terrorism in respect to the globally televised event. To that end, the city was required to expend law enforcement resources to guarding a wide perimeter around Staples Center and the motorcade travel route. Some have estimated the single event itself has already blown the entire public safety budget for the current fiscal year which just started this month.
