BET The Latest to Try and Save ‘The Game’

Posted by Juan

Cast is on-board but a cable worthy licensing agreement the biggest hurdle

It appears the folks at BET have no shame in sifting through the CW’s trash.  After the CW canceled “Girlfriends” late last year BET, quickly swooped in, acquired the repeat rights.  Now it seems they’re taking it one step further and hope to revitalized the loosely spunoff Girlfriends hit series, “The Game.”

According to TV Guide the entire cast is said to be excited about the prospects of a fourth season.  BET and CBS Television Studios are currently in negotiations to work out a more affordable, cable-appropriate licensing fee which would allow new episodes of Mara Brock Akil’s series to be produced.

“The licensing issues are very complicated,” a source told TV Guide. Earlier this year, BET acquired the rights to run repeats of the “Girlfriends” spin-off.

To the disappointment of its cult-like following, the CW decided not to renew the program for its fall line up.  In an attempt to save the show, Akil tried repositioning the sitcom as an hour-long dramedy, in the same vain as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”  Season 3′s finale was scripted and filmed differently, to showcase what that might look like.  Apparently the CW brass still wasn’t feeling it so it would appear that BET is their last hope.  If picked up “The Game” would remain a half-hour comedy.

Since I’m a fan of the show, I definitely hope that BET picks it up. Plus, the way the season finale ended, they left us hanging, so, I want to see what’s going to happen next. PEACE!!!
