VIBE Founder, Quincy Jones Irate Over Shutdown/ Managment

Posted by Juan

Vows to buy back the online components

Quincy Jones

While Quincy Jones‘ prodigal son, Michael Jackson might have died just last week, it hasn’t stopped the iconic producer from staying focused.  Following news that pioneering urban entertainment rag, VIBE Magazine was closing its doors, It appears the one-time owner of the publication is interested in purchasing its online interests.  Although rumored to have been interested in saving the entire brand, Jones in fact is will not seek to purchase the printed publication.

“I’m trying to buy my magazine back now,” Quincy told EbonyJet.com in a Tuesday phone call. “They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’m’a take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”

“We gotta get into the 21st century you know,” he added. “Print and all that stuff is over, we gotta remember that. The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Post Intelligencer. The Miami Herald. They’re over the same way as the record business. We have got to get into this century.”

This is very interesting news from two perspectives.  While he acknowledging that the print medium is doomed he seems very critical of VIBE’s management of the publication.  While Quincy might be old school, he’s ALWAYS been about business and that’s why he was able to make Michael Jackson the most iconic BRAND in the history of music and managed the careers of many successful artists.  He understands the technology despite his age and I’ll have to take his word that perhaps the VIBE brass indeed did “mess his magazine all up.”

Never should have sold it in the first place. We need to keep our black owned companies. We are always selling them to the highest bidder.

That’s a fair point. But I think any business man is entitled to make money. He only started it because there was a void.
