Internet Gangsters in politics?!  Get this: South Carolina Republican/ Conservative activist Rusty DePass deleted his Facebook page Sunday after outrage stemming from race sensitive comments directed at the first lady.

While commenting on a news story about a gorilla escape at at Columbia, South Carolina zoo, DePass wrote, “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

Now I think we’ve all learned by now as reasonably internet proficient individuals that if you don’t want everyone to know what you’re thinking, don’t broadcast it on Facebook or other social networks.  Naturally, South Carolina political blogger Will Folks picked up on this IMMEDIATELY and had a field day.

DePass would later issue a half assed apology.  “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest,” reports the New York Daily News. “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes.  Hmmmmm.  Of course the Daily News said they could find no such comment.

Columbia’s mayor, Democrat Bob Coble publically has asked DePass to apologize PROPERLY THIS TIME. “The comment is reprehensible. There’s nothing funny about it.  What he needs to do is simply apologize in a straightforward manner.”

DePass has had a history of sideways remarks.  In a 2007 Op-Ed endorsing Rudy Guiliani  “Most of us, of course, particularly in South Carolina, never gave a damn about New Yorkers, but somehow the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, made those people Americans again.”

Dude maybe a racist, yes.  I think the most obvious asumption about his character however is he’s an asshole and that’s relatively undebateable.
