Eminem Well On His Way To 1 Million ‘Relapses’

Posted by Juan

What’s his secret in the midst of declining record sales, a hiatus and an impossible economic climate?

Eminem

What do you get when you add already declining music sales with a nosediving economy?  Right, no one buying albums (at least legally.)  But what happens when you add a maniac back from his hibernation to that same equation?  Well that is what Eminem set out to find out when he released his new album “Relapse.”

Although, Em has been known to do huge numbers especially in his first week, times have changed and he’s been gone for quite some time so despite his insane pre-album promotional campaign no one could have predicted the success of the project.  However, according to Billboard, in his first week Slim Shady moved a whopping 608,000 units and though sales subsided, his 211K in week two is clearly no Relapse.  His 819,000 total records sold puts him on pace to pass a million records in the first month, an unthinkable feat in this climate.

For those who have purchased the album, what compelled you to do so?  I’ve heard it in pieces, and although I believe its a good project coming from a great artist, these days that doesn’t necessarily translate into sales.  His tireless pre-promotion of the album, including partnership with XXL and Marvel comics and his publicity stunt with Jimmy Kimmel sure didn’t hurt his cause.

But if you ask me, I think middle Americans (regardless of race) relate to Eminem.  Yeah he’s a bit of a junkie but he’s also from a blue colar town that America is trying to rally around.  He’s never flossed a big chain or crazy whips.  He’s always been about telling you and sharing his problems kind of like Mary J. Blige.  People relate to his psychosis to a certain extent and believe in the face of decreased pay, job loss and wall street pension scandals he raps how most feel.  Thoughts?

I bought the album because I liked his prior work.

Personally, I don’t care for the new one. You get used to albums being dark, but this one is darker than dark.

No playful banter, no smiling rogue. If I had to sum it up, I would say that it sounds like an album written by a serial killer.

I had hoped for something similar to “Without Me” or “Square Dance”, but I was left with Charles Manson with a beat.

By the way does anyone notice how oddly we’re served BRUNO ads on anything tagged Eminem? I guess the film is trying to live a little off of Slim Shady’s marketing success and of course the stunt at the MTV movie awards.

IT’S PRETTY COOL. HE’S WAY OUT THERE, HE HAS ALOT OF PROBLEMS. YOU REALLY HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT DUDE TELLS ALL HIS BUSINESS AND IT ALL SEEMS TO BE THE TRUTH.

I purchased the album because I’ve been a fan of him since I was 15 so there wasn’t even a doubt of buying Relapse. I’ve been waiting for material from him for years. Yes its a dark album, but most of his albums are. If you’re a fan of Em then you won’t be shocked at all. All he did was bring Slim Shady back from ’99 and brought him up to date for the ’09. He’s nice with the wordplay and just spits what he feels. He ain’t gotta rap about what car he drives, what jewelry he owns, or killing niggas. He raps about his life and maybe some twisted fantasies. Relapse is great. His best work yet……..

I downloaded his album and to me it wasn’t even worth that. Im glad I didnt pay for it. He does have skills but he just talks rhymes about some nonesense. He must have really relapsed. He is a walking gimmick. Busta rhymes, and meth and reds albums are better in my opinion

I bought the album, I’m a fan of his and the album IS GOOD. That has to be said, it really isn’t just selling because of just hype. Also, it’s very hard for me to not buy anything that Dr. Dre isn’t involved in. Em has his own niche in hip-hop and he stays true to it.
