Will Smith To Produce Film About Hurricane Katrina Rooftop Hero
Ex-Marine, John Lee Hancock saved 244 lives many of whom were elderly and handicapped
Sony Pictures and Will Smith‘s Overbrook Entertainment have announced that they will produce the drama about ex-Marine, John Keller who succesful organized the rescue of hundreds of his neighbors during Hurricane Katrina.
Written and directed by John Lee Hancock, “The American Can,” tells the tale of 6’7″ 260 lbs, who saved some 244 residents from his housing complex, many of them elderly or handicapped. For five days, Keller, dubbed the “Can Man,” kept away looters and kept the residents safe the rising waters eventually leading to their heroic rooftop evacuation.
This sounds like it could be an interesting flick. I’m curious as to why its listed as a “drama.” I’m hoping not too much creative licence is taken in the films production and we’re privvy to the actual story. I think its about time we tell more of the stories of those who not only perished but fought hard to survive in the flood waters following Hurricane Katrina.
