Alicia Keys, Rwandan Teen Rapper Urge ‘Idol’ Viewers To Text For Charity
Keys Keep a Child Alive organization brings medical supplies and care for HIV/AIDS patients in Africa and India.
Alicia Keys made a special guest appearance on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” in effort to ask viewers for $5 donations toward her Keep a Child Alive organization by texting the word “alive” to 90999. Co-founded by Keys, The organization brings medical supplies and care to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.
Keys brought one of the charities beneficiaries with her to give a face to the organization’s work, 15-year-old Rwandan rapper Noah. The teenager also performed on the show sporting lyrics that raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic and life in Rwanda.
“He’s dealt with probably more than any of us will ever have to in our entire lifetime,” Keys told the Associated Press. “For us to help people like him in his situation with Keep a Child Alive, and with everyone watching being able to know that even with all the hardships they might be going through, there’s always someone going through something far worse, so to help someone other than yourself is really a noble thing to do.”
Key’s appearance was apparently sparked by Keys’ annual charity Black Ball event last year where the organization honored “American Idol” creator Simon Fuller. Noah performed at the event. Impressed by his performance, Fuller invited Keys and Noah to appear on Idol.
