Dame Dash Blames His Generosity For Financial Flop

Posted by Juan

“My mistake was watching everyone else’s careers and not watching mine.”

Dame Dash

Hip Hop’s posterboy for hard times, Damon Dash is finally breaking his silence in regards to his unfortunate fall from grace. The former chief executive at Roc-a-Fella has fallen victim to everything from property foreclosure to owing $2 million in back taxes to most recently being dumped by his wife of four years and business partner, Rachel Roy.

So where did Dash go wrong?  Recently he told Billboard that his financial woes are a product of helping others like Roy, Jigga and Jim Jones and not spending enough time on his own projects.   He says he was preoccupied with making sure everyone else was good that he neglected to manage his own financial heath.

“My mistake was watching everyone else’s careers and not watching mine.” He tells Billboard.com, “After being able to settle my wife’s company, I was able to start doing other things. My first approach was the music business and getting with Jim Jones… I spent the last six months doing research, trying to figure out how to use all my resources to blow this out.”

I can see that but I’m definately not buying it.  I’m not sure he’s taking full responsibility for his downfall.  Its ok to admit you made some mistakes but he’s trying to pawn it off as if he’s broke because he cared about others too much.

He married Roy four years ago.  His problems were festering long before he did.  Correct me if I’m wrong but at the height of his career one would have characterized Dash as conceited and borderline pompous.  Clearly confidence are important characteristics of success but so is humility and perhaps heavy dose of Karma has caught up to him.

I could believe it b/c Dame definitely looked out for his people all the time. Thats why all the former Roc artist including Kanye effs wit him hard. Example: Remember when Twista was going around Rocking the Roc-a-Fella chain and everybody thought he was signed to the Roc and he had a hot little run with those Kanye produced hits like “Overnight Celebrity” he was never signed to the Roc or even under serious consideration. Dame did that to put the pressure on Twista’s label at the time Atlantic to treat their top rap artist (at that time) better. Just by hinting that he might sign to the Roc made Atlantic Pony up mega loot for Twista, and that was all due to Dame, he did that off the strength.

Idk 4P, sounds like a lame excuse to me. Dame lookin for some sympathy funds. I understand lookin out for the next man if you got it, but @ the end of the day everyone has to look out for themselves & their own families. MC Hammer could’ve said the same thing that he was lookin out for his employees by having a $50,000 a month payroll. Tyson, Suge…all beleive that same thing. I personally thinks that it boils down to self awareness, knowing how much your making or potentially making versus your regular expenses…throughtout your entire life.

Like my dad always used to tell me “stay within your self.” He shouldn’t get a pass…its not like Dame was living in poverty while everyone else ate.

I know they say don’t judge a book by it’s cover but I’m going to have to. Dame does not come off as the giving person when it comes to putting other people first. I will say that Dame is or was a very smart and driven business man but one thing he lacked was humbleness. All I can think of is when he did MTV cribs and was so proud of the fact that he popped tags everytime he put on a new outfit; One pet peeve of mine are materialistic people, yuck. It’s the classic case of Hip Hop artists and entrepreneurs who are just not smart in their business dealings. Too concerened with living for the now and not for the future is an all too familiar story. As for his wife, or ex-wife, could we honestly say that she was with him for his personality and not his wallet? Granted, she had her own money (so they say) coming into the relationship, she doesn’t look like the type of woman that would want to be the sole breadwinner in the home she appears to be the type that likes to make her money and spend her husbands. Watch the company you keep is what I must conclude with.

Exactly and what kind of message is that sending that having material things = success. That’s why the crack game is as violent as it is. Hello there are plenty of crackheads out there. Everyone’s territorial and greedy because they want MORE.
      .
Now hopefully kids will learn more from Dash’s demise then they did from his rise to power.

I hear you M.Y. but name one successful hip-hop artist thats humble. If you think about it the way Kiwi West acts is like Dame w/a feminine touch. Unfortunately humility is not apart of the music business but that’s especially true in Hip-Hop

Guess among his Bible reading he skipped the verse Take the thorn (or whatever it is) out of your own eye, then you’ll be better equipped to take the thorn out of your brother’s eye. Wishing you the best Dame.
