NJ Nets, Jay-Z Still Plan To Move To Brooklyn. Delay May Cost Them Lebron
Despite economic concerns, The Nets confirmed they will be ready to play in Brooklyn for 2011-2012 season
Earlier this week Brooklyn got its first fragrance and it appears after much apprehension surrounding the economy that it will now get its basketball too. The New Jersey Nets, a franchise part owned by Jay-Z WILL reportedly still make the move to Brooklyn with play scheduled to commence in the 2011-2012 basketball season. In a report published by The Sporting News, CEO Bretty Yormark confirmed the move.
“We’ll be there for the 2011-2012 season. We’ve pre-sold 20 percent of our suites…We’ve got eight of our 14 founding partnerships already completely signed. Next week, we’ll announce our ninth.”
Speaking about the move in light of a very unstable economy, Yormark instilled confidence that the move is still imminent.
“We feel very confident about the financing,” Yormark added. “We feel very confident about just the project in general, and once we get through this final piece of litigation, we’ll be in the accelerated mode to break ground and get ready to open.”
The move had originally been slated to be completed with the team being open in Brooklyn for this past baskeball seasons but Bruce Ratner and his ownership contingent (of which Jay-Z is a partner) have beein in a grewling eminent-domain fight which has pre-empted any groundbreaking on the Barclays Center. Ratner told the New York Times via a spokesperson that the group hopes to have these issues ironed out by late spring or early summer.
However the delays have pushed the move 1 year past the Lebron/ All-Star Free agency period. While the team is apparently salivating at a chance to land the superstar and/or perhaps one of the other high profile free agents that might hit the market in the 2010 off season, playing in the East Rutherford swamp for even one year while the arena is built just doesn’t have the same sex appeal.
