Jadakiss Paid By Coogi For Ad Name Drop in Memorial ‘Letter to B.I.G.’
Rappers turning tricks for marketing $$$: Jada’s Memorial to B.I.G. an infomercial for Sweaters?
I’ve been advocating that Hip Hop both mainstream and underground foster a marriage with corporate America for a minute now. While most artists have yet to find a tasteful medium, in light of struggling music sales and a declining economy I can’t hate on emcees who’ve whored themselves by corporate name dropping on the track. But what if 2pac sold a sponsorship on “Dear Momma” or “Brenda’s Got A Baby?” or maybe Scarface on “I Seen a Man Die?” What’s off limits? Would you turn a memorial track for your dead homeboy into a Coogi ad?
Well allegedly, that’s exactly what Jadakiss did with his “Letter to B.I.G.,” a memorial track to the late great Biggie Smalls off the Notorious, biopic soundtrack. I’m going to ask our PR expert, Zack to chime in on this one but I think its safe to say that kind of move is a public relations hand grenade without the pin. The line in question is in his first verse where Jadakiss, who oh by the way was dipped in Coogi for the video says:
“In your memory I keep Coogi in my closet…”
Any true fan knows that BIG loved him some Coogi so the mention went unsuspected but according to a Gawker.com source Coogi paid ‘Kiss tens of thousands of dollars to namedrop in the song. While product placement may water down the potency of the game now-a-days its generaly accepted. But in a track to a dear deceased friend? Jada’s got some ‘splaining to do. Then again I could hear B.I.G. sayin “Make that money baby.”

BIG was a hustler so I dont think he would have had a problem w/it. But there is such a thing as time and place
Agreed.
I would have been more forthcoming about it maybe cause now he looks like a scumbag.
its a recession or so they say
Hip Hop artists have been name dropping for free, for many a years they might as well get paid for it even though it wasn’t the most appropriate song to do it. Jada just should not have lied and said that he was trying to make an authentic and real song knowing that he was banking. The song was hot nonetheless IMO
