Hollis Famous Burgers Grand Opening: Burgers & a Tribute To Run DMC and JMJ
New Queens burger spot a museum dedicated to Hip Hop hollowed grounds
Darryl “DMC” McDaniels checking out the menu
Earlier this week, Corey Kilgannon of the New York Times profiled a brand new burger joint that opened up in the dilapidated section of Holis, Queens. Run DMC fans will recognize the neighborhood instantly as the birthplace of their beloved rap crew.
While Hollis Famous Burgers may cook up a great slider hamburger for just a buck, its the embiance that owner, Orville Hall hopes will be the major draw for the establishment. Diners are treated to experience what Hall, a childhood friend of Run DMC calls the Hollis Hip Hop Museum which features more than 100 items on the walls testifying to the neighborhood as a fertile ground for hip-hop artists like Ja Rule, LL Cool J, and Irv Gotti and of course Run DMC.
Hollis Famous Burgers and Museum is located at Hollis Avenue and 203rd Street, stategically located steps from the former residence of the late, great Jam Master Jay. While the author of the Times article cautions readers about the neighborhood, the reality is that although Hollis is not yet “gentrified” a seasoned New Yorker has clearly seen worse. Otherwise, the article is pretty eloquent so I won’t spoil it.
