Duke Ellington Becomes First African American on a U.S. Coin
great honor and bout damn time..you mean to tell MLK has no official coin status
Big ups and mega homage. Jazz legend Duke Ellington is the first African-American to appear on an American coin, the U.S. Mint says in introducing the latest in its line of state-themed quarters. Good site below has more

For some time now people have been trying to get MLK on the one dollar coin but nothing yet.

I just read that Duke actually isn’t the first black on a coin. this first was on Missouri’s quarter which features louis, clark and a slave named York.
