? Of The Day: Was The NY Post/ Page Six Apology Appropriate?

Posted by Juan

Newspaper’s racial “stimulus” leads to more monkey business

Stimulus Cartoon

Thursday the New York Post issued this statement regarding the political cartoon released in its Page Six column on Wednesday.

“Wednesday’s Page Six cartoon — caricaturing Monday’s police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut — has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp’s body: ‘They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill,’ one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else — as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past — and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.”

Is it me or does this apology seem very angry in its tone.  While I can agree with the Post about Captain African America (Aka Al Sharpton) they’re clearly missing the point.  If the cartoon is offensive…its offensive!  If you want to stand by it then do that but if you’re going to apologize, apologize to those effected and move on.  To issue and apology and infuse some venom for Sharpton is very juvenile and I would expect a paper of its caliber to be more professional and SMARTER than that.  After all subtleties are what got them in trouble in the first place.  I think they’ve done more harm than good with this statement.

Sidenote: Sharpton and his goons still plan to “mobilize” in protest of the paper today.  What a joke!

  1. Juan… You’re talking about the NY Post. I know they’ve been around since Ben Franklin (or what is Alexander Hamilton?) But really… Do you expect better from them? They aren’t The New York Times. It’s a daily tabloid.

    • Juan says:

You and I have spoken about this before at length. I can stand the Post. A newspaper that photoshops front page photos is no better than the Enquirer. As a matter of fact they’re more dangerous because they pose as a “news” outlet.

    • Juan says:

*Rereads* I guess you’re right I am giving them too much credit. Man I didn’t realize they’ve been around that long.

    • Zack says:

Hey, you don’t want them to “misinterpret that statement” just like the rest of us “sensitive” black folks, do you? I think they are embarrassed because even some of their staff members probably threatened to quit over this bullshit. I honestly believe that they are ANGRY that black folks actually figured out the joke, not about whether Sharpton is offended. If anything it’s more offensive that they think Al Sharpton does all the thinking for black people. What dopes. We actually had a NY Post subscription briefly, but canceled immediately after we saw how horrible it is/was.

      • M.Y. says:

        lol this is true Zack

People can say what they want about it not being racist if they want, point blank, it was suppose to be funny yet no one laughed when they saw it. Universal thinking is something else. For everyone that didn’t find it offensive thats your business as for me I have already spoken to my NYC Senators and expressed my disgust and dissapointment and that’s just the beginning…And how are they going to blame Al for seeking revenge as if he placed the pencil in the cartoonist hands. It’s a little insulting to me for someone to insinuate that I would need an individual to convince me that something is offensive smh. Besides, that sad ass “apology” looks like it was written by someone during their bathroom break.

and lastly, where the hell is PETA?!

  2. mob says:

    juan went in i agree

  3. candy says:

Woooooow!!!! I was astounded when I heard the “apology” it was more offensive to me than the cartoon itself. If I wasn’t boycotting the post Wednesday I certainly am now. Juan and Zack and M.Y. Pretty much hit the high points– I agree!

  4. 4PL says:

The post is a joke. As far as Al Sharpton is concerned a lot of people hate on him but truth be told he’s always one of the first to step up to the plate w/issues that effect black people. Granted he’s going to make some scratch in the meantime, but lets be real this is America no one works for free.

  5. skinnygirluver says:

There is and never was anything to apologize about. That “apology” was weak and dumb and it is because it is pandering to all the people who were offended. I’m not offended, it’s going to take a helluva lot more than a cartoon to offend me on a race level. How about not allowing me to vote, or not giving me a job, or being 3/5ths of a person. Come on people it’s a damn cartoon, I don’t care if the monkey had OBAMA written on the damn thing. You can’t stop people from thinking what they wanna think but they have no right to impose on your liberties, that is something to protest not a cartoon.

    • M.Y. says:

I think that this is what the problem is. No one does anything until it becomes way too much to handle and anger takes over proper thinking and logical action. Why do we have to wait for them to stop us from voting to take a stand against something? Don’t you see that it is more than the cartoon? It’s the little “insignificant” things that need to be tackled before they become bigger messes like the limitations you listed. If you take a stand on something that is so small they know better not to come with something more ridiculous. I could care less what they think. It’s no secret there are many racist people all around us you will probably pass one in the next 15 minutes. Thinking and drawing and posting for the world to see are two very different things. But then again you weren’t offended.
