J Dilla
“A Suite for Ma Dukes”
James Yancey (1974-2006) better known as J Dilla was born in Detroit. His career as a producer had a defining role in Hip-Hop. He produced hits for A Tribe Called Quest , De La Soul , Common and Erykah Badu to name a few. At the tender age of 32 he passed away in Los Angeles in the care of his mother, Ma Dukes of lupus related illness. Now the hip hop community is coming together to hold a benefit concert in LA on 2/22/09 pay tribute and to support his mom who has also become diagnosed with Lupus. The lineup is undisclosed but there will be a 40-piece orchestra conducted by Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson paying tribute to Dilla by interpreting his music.
