Ebony’s Obama Issue Breaks Sales Record
Highest sold issue in magazine’s 67 year history
Some people collect shoes like my man Lexicon167, some people collect stamps, I have always collected newspapers; Papers from important newsworthy events, perhaps I’ve told you this before. I have papers from 9/11, JFK Sr. and Jr’s deaths, Columbine, Michael Jordan‘s retirement etc. As you may have noticed the day after the election folks clamored to the newsstands to pick up a copy of their local rag as memento of history making it harder than usual for me to keep up with my hobby.
Pehaps that’s why it seems that every magazine since has tried to feature President Obama on its cover, in part to document history but more likely to make a buck. A lot of magazines must have gotten a boost in sales from the images of the President, but, Johnson Publishing has reported that its January 2009 issue of Ebony recorded the magazines highest sales in its 67-year history. With over 400,000 copies sold they more than doubled the average monthly sales. This gave a major boost to the struggling magazine.
“The magnitude of President Obama’s historic victory demanded that EBONY magazine pay tribute to such an achievement with a commemorative issue. Our mission for over six decades has been to tell our stories like no one else can,” said Linda Johnson Rice, chairman and CEO of Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., based in Chicago.
If you didn’t buy your copy, chances are they’re going to be hard to find so Ebony has made them available via reprint on their website.
