Are Locks for Everybody?
That question has been boggling me for some time now. I wear a natural hairstyle and I was explaining to a guy friend of mine that I was considering locking my hair. He responded with, “I hate those things and why would you do that and you are not Rasta?” I am glad he asked. Not all Rastas are locked, and obviously, not all locked people are Rastas. But the concept of natural beauty, originality, and the struggle for contentment is why I love locks. Initially, one may not see the beauty in such a hairstyle but it requires internal reflection. You pretty much have to know your beautiful and smart and your locks will shine in any room of intellectuals that are confident and self-aware. Some women don’t embrace their culture or nurture their roots, they perm them. I’m not knocking the perm, the Jerry curl or any chemicals but seriously ask yourself, self, why am I doing this? What inspired it (grade school, magazines, advertising)? Rastas are not the originators of locks! Many people believe that dreadlocks actually were first wore by the Asian Indians that crossed over from Asia and Europe to Alaska and Canada. Dreadlocks were also worn during Biblical times by John the Baptist and Samson. dreds-blog.bmp
My initial reaction when I observed a caucasian, or a non African descendant wearing locks I was like what the heck is going on there? But, I get it now. Locks represents freedom of choice, beauty in raw form, etc. I love this exert from Andre 3000′s verse from The Whole World
Dread that nappy shit up, throw a shell in it
Whatever floats your boat, or finds your lost remote
And this for dem niggaz workin at the airpo’t
who got laid off, I take my shades off
If you look straight in my eyes, you still might see a disguise
FILED IN Fashion, Need to Know

good post, love the 3000 reference. when i see some people doing it i laugh to myself like what? i guess at the end of the day u won’t know why a person does it unless u ask so u can’t judge unless u do. i’m attracted to women with them when there done right and maintained right, all i can say is if you where them, clean them and tame them correctly
You know what? After reading this I need to put my feeling about “other people” who wear locks aside and embrace what you’ve said here. At this point, it is a freedom of expression. We aren’t all going to agree on how one fashions themselves. Wait… What was the question?
Hilarious! People are going to hate on what you embrace regardless. So, you should do whatever you like. The question is…What do you like?

I like my head bald. I just hope that however people have their hair it doesn’t smell funny and doesn’t have bugs. That is all I ask.
1. There were no Asian Indians that crossed from Asia into Alaska and Canada. Two groups crossed the “dimunitive Blacks” or piggmies and regular Asians. There were not related to the Asian hordes that entered the area we now call India. These two groups joined and formed what we now call Native Americans. The African group that created Hinduism, the Dravidians, wore locs, but they are not related to the group of Asians that crossed the Bering Strait into Northern America.
2. Locs originate in central and west Africa, and moved their way North to Kemet or what is commonly called Egypt.
3. For most of humanity’s existence Locs were reserved for Priests and Sages.
4. Rastas used to reserve locs for those most serious among their ranks.
thank you for the knowledge, big ups
I’ve always loved and embraced locks, b/c of my Jamaican heritage it came naturally. All types of locks too from “tamed” to manipulated. Honestly if I could get away with it I would never put a razor to my face or head for the rest of my life. Real Rastas don’t really like the term “dread” it infers that their look is dreadful.
its spiritual. i been lockin since september. aint been sick. i feel better more energy. fuck better. energy is release thru the top of the head… if your hair is locked spiritual, mental, physical AND sexual energy circulates thru the body…..real shit. i feel like a battery that always recharges itself.
real rastas in fact embrace the term “dread”…it means to dread or fear God. right?
f’n better too huh, lol classic
thats wzup
yeah. its a real powerful thang. hoes like em too. i don’t even mack no more. the dreadknots do all my talkin for me. some chicks will let you beat just cuz they like locs.
my gal homegirl say i got them “caintwaits” like fellow d-town native chris bosh….caintwait till they get longer…lol….
