New Years Resolution Marketing: Music Biz Capitalizes on the Overweight
A bevy of stars look to cash in with weight loss related products
Perhaps you’ve noticed but it seems that as of the new year every one is releasing an endorsed product “proven” to help you lose weight. Its not unusual however. Every year, as overweight Americans and those who perennially gain weight over the holiday season look to trim down. Everyone from Gyms to Diet plans, to those promoting workout plans spend billions of dollars in advertising to “help” you stick to your new years resolution.
Now while you’ve probably broken that resolution a half dozen times before your newest weight loss gadget to arrives, that hasn’t stopped the music biz from trying to capitalize on the frenzy this year.
A couple of weeks ago we showed you an unfortunately slimmed down Toccara hocking her new exercise DVD but she’s not alone.
Countless Time Fat Back Award Winner, Kim Kardashian has also released her effort at inspiring other women to sculpt a body like hers. (Something tells me Highbrid Nation will go hard with the endorsement of this.)
Even De La Soul is getting in on the act. After working with Nike on their signature Dunks, De La has once again collaborated with the athletic apparel giant on a exercise album? I’m guessing workout music. Peep the video for more.
Perhaps my favorite new celebrity trainer is the super sexy Mel B. with her “Total Fit – Legs and Bums” (ha ha she said bums.) While she probably will do more to discourage woman and distract the men her body alone grants her product a lot of credibility.
Then of course there was Lil Cease’s Hardbody Fitness series. Like almost everything in his career it was mad bootleg.
Well like everything in Hip Hop, copycats are more of the rule rather than the exception. While I think its silly, in a recession and the dire state of music, whatever works right?
