MARKETING MATTERS: ‘Wrestler’ Star Mickey Rourke To Do Wrestlemania
Going the extra mile to market yourself.
I’m a firm believer that you can never go too far for the sake of marketing as long as you don’t offend others. In effort to promote his new film “The Wrestler” Oscar nominated actor, Mickey Rourke, will actually wrestle for real on the sports biggest stage, Wrestlemania.
Rourke told Access Hollywood that the WWE has booked the actor for a match for Wrestlemania XXV this April 5 in Houston. Although the report has yet to be confirmed he is rumored to be matched against Chris Jericho.
While Professional Wrestling (WWE) is often dismissed as “fake” by many of its detractors, its marketability is undeniable. In 2007 WWE grossed a whopping $486 million, with a net profit of approximately $52 million. As of August 2006, the company’s net worth was over $1 billion. Needless to say there is definately a marketplace for it and they’re catering to their demographic very well.
Rourke who has used the film as his comback performance know this and that’s why they’ve chosen to pit the film’s star in the grandest of stages in effort to win over the sports’ most loyal fans.
Rourke will become the latest of gimmick type celebrtity participants joining the ranks of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and football Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor.

I was reading that WWE originally wasnt happy bout Rourke’s film because it “exposed the busines”, letting everyone know that things arent real. However the film has gotten rave reviews and is getting all types of Oscar buzz. I guess if you cant beat them, join them. It wil likely equal a huge payday for all those involved. Rourke himself will likely walk away will a cool Million for one nights’s work, which is way more than he is likely to make in his upcoming role in Iron Man 2
At least he’s getting work. This is marketing without whoring yourself.
Rourke did a damn good job playing in the Wrestler. Who ever didn’t know the WWE was a staged show must have been living under a rock (I’m sure they are in good company).
.
I think it is a win/win for both parties.
There is at least one guy who still believes its real…
THAT $#!T IS CLASSIC!!!! LMAO!!! *samples*
