Lupe Fiasco Wins USA Networks Character Approved Award

Posted by Juan

Given to the most creative individual deemed to have a positive influence on American culture

Lupe

USA Network has announced the winners of the first-ever Character Approved Awards.  Now you’re probably saying what the hell is that.  Well honor is bestowed on the group of individuals from a cross-section of creative disciplines who the network deems as having a positive influence on American culture.

Taking home this years title for Hip Hop……scratch that MUSIC is Chicago’s other Native Son, Lupe Fiasco.  Lupe who first endeared himself to the mainstream with his crossover hit, “Kick Push” has been aspiring to broaden the artistic horizons of music fans and re-establish the imaginative standard with his musical ingenuity and emphasis on his storytelling and lyrical prowess.

AWARD VIGNETTE

Like his Chicago cohort I was a fan of this cat real early.  I don’t think he’s the best lyricist to grace the microphone but I can see the effort he puts into his music.  He’s the musical equivalent to what basketball calls a “gym rat.”  He’s harkens back to the old school where cats was less about bling and album sales but how many “Oooooohs” they got in the cypher.

I think that’s where his frustration with the music business and desire to retire comes from.  He’s not necessarily the pinacle of the rap game but he’s definately on another plane/ demension than most while still keeping the heads nodding.

If I didn’t do a good job explaining the award, its all good.  Head over to USANetwork for more info but NOT until you finish your B.I. here.  :-)

Nice use of the double entendre (“other Native Son”) for those who don’t know that the book, “Native Son” was set in Chicago. And yes, Lupe is the man. And you look like him a little bit. Or should I say he looks like you.
