I hit upon this page because I was looking for a list of vegan hip hop artists. The first comment kind of disturbed me.

"I’ve been a vegan on and off for the past 2 years - it’s really .. really hard."
If you eat out with non-vegans constantly, it might be difficult. Otherwise, I haven't found it to be hard at all. (This is my 3rd or so year of veganism.) I mean, think about this. My sister in law doesn't like mushrooms or onions. So when she eats something, she doesn't include mushrooms or onions. And when she orders food at a restaurant, she says "no mushrooms or onions please." It's not like she is wringing her hands, pitying herself because "it's really... really hard" to not want to eat mushrooms or onions. She just tells people that she doesn't want to eat it or picks it out of her food.

That being said, it helps to have a good cookbook so that you can learn how to make foods you DO want to eat.

The commenter also said:
"A fun fact about vegan foods.. If you’re wondering ‘is this vegan?’ you can ask yourself if it goes over 100degrees cooking, if it does.. it’s not vegan."

That's a definition of RAW foods. A vegan food is obviously one that doesn't contain animal products.

If you're interested in finding out more information, I would suggest Russell Simmon's book (for the inspiration), Mark Bittman's "How to Cook everything Vegetarian" (for the recipes), and Bob and Jenna Torres' "Vegan Freaks".

I have been a vegetarian for a while and being vegan is not something I would enjoy, first no dairy, even though the smell could be, but without that cheese, or the option, and I have ate vegan cheese and it is hella on the stomach, so I will stick with Red Bamboo, VP2, Vegie Palate, Zen Palate, Zen and Red Bamboo here in BK

Hmmmmm... I can't envision my life without meat but if I had to I guess I could if needed. I think living without any animal biproducts is a major lifestyle decision. That doesn't just include milk, cheeses etc but leathers, furs and other portions of your daily life not limited to food. Very interesting head scratching post.

I love vegies but there is no way I can be a Vegan. There is just something about ripping the flesh off a cooked animal that serious appeals to the beast in me. And I'm not even joking. Part of the reason I like meat so much is because I like the fact that I'm eating an animal that was killed just for my consumption....I think I'm gonna stop there because the more I go on the more I sound like I have some serious issue.

I'm not giving up eating cows and chickens for nothing. Especially if it's fried. :P

[Sorry if this becomes long, I'm a big vegetarian and take pride in being one]
I've been a vegan on and off for the past 2 years - it's really .. really hard. I've been a vegetarian for as long as I can remember.. In my opinion I don't think it's right to own a dog, and eat meat and not think anything is wrong about that. In my opinion if you can own a dog (or any animal) and eat meat without thinking twice there's something wrong with you - maybe you're a hypocrite and ok with being one. And no, not owning an animal and eating meat is not ok either. There's health/food problems associated with meat eaters compared to vegans or even vegetarians. Many times, people are much healthier/skinnier too. But out of all the reasons why I don't eat meat, I don't because I like animals. Just because they can't speak doesn't make it ok to kill them for us to eat. Maybe it's because of my love for animals that I can easily say no to a Double Cheeseburger but cheese is probably my weakness along with the soy-meats (which include milk/eggs). You're pretty much limited to Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts and some other various not-animal-products.

My dad is a hunter (he hunts many times all year round) so it's not like my family chose this route (I'm the only vegetarian in my entire family and my gf eats meat too).

To each his own, you can eat meat and I don't care - I'd just prefer you didn't.. but of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

[PS: A fun fact about vegan foods.. If you're wondering 'is this vegan?' you can ask yourself if it goes over 100degrees cooking, if it does.. it's not vegan.]
