“Notorious” – Where to watch it this weekend in B.I.G.’s Own, Brooklyn

Posted by Juan

Not as many options as there used to be but I’ll break ‘em down

Flatbush Pavillion
The Flatbush Pavilion: One of the Brooklyn Movie theaters I used to attend as a kid

As a Brooklyinite, born and bred, I can’t help but get hyped about the release of “Notorious” this Friday.  As a casual movie buff, I faithfull?y frequent the movies in Battery Park which is in Lower Manhattan, opposite “Ground Zero.”  Why not Brooklyn you ask  Well for one, the theaters at Battery Park are less crowded because although its a large theater its not quite accessible to the normal “city” crowd and performs more as a local theater.  Secondly they have stadium style seating.

The Flatbush Pavilion is now an American Apparel Clothing store

However there’s never been a movie that I’ve wanted to watch in Brooklyn more than “Notorious” given the impact he’s had on the borough.  In thinking about it, I’ve realized the theaters I used to frequent as a kid in BK are all but gone leaving only 4 choices for movie goers like me who want experience the bioflick in B.I.G.’s home turf.

Linden Boulevard – very close to Queens and one of THE worst theaters in the city.  Its very violent and known for melees.  Several years ago they installed metal detectors and hired club security to shepard the wild beasts. That’s a no go.

Sheepshead Bay – what used to be the crown pinnacle of movie theaters back in the day was Brooklyn’s first “multi-plex” featuring what seemed like 200 theaters has become run down due to lack of upkeep and unless you live in South Brooklyn is out of the way.  A back up option at best.

Kings Plaza – The theater at Kings Plaza is located in (believe it or not) Brooklyn’s only true mall. While this might be a good option the theater is very old, probably already sold out for this weekend and if you’re looking to watch the flick without side commentary from your neighbor, good luck!

Court Street – Prior to defecting for greener pastures in the city (Manhattan,) Court Street was my movie go to spot.  Unfortunately it was also everyone else’s as well with movies often sold out and every Tom, Dick and Harry selecting the hot spot for date night.  While the hood factor is still high and you’d be best served to buy your tickets…NOW, this is probably the best option if you do in fact chose to catch Notorious in BK this weekend.

The last and perhaps most appropriate (although I don’t recommend it) option is to cop the DVD on bootleg for around $5 cash.  I’ve already seen some of the bootleggers pumping “advanced” copies.  If you’ve got a clear copy let us know where you copped it so we can share with the Nation.

GOOD LUCK!

DID YOU WRITE: “Wild Beasts”? I love your writing style, man! I’m always guaranteed a laugh out loud moment, especially when we team up to put a muzzle on Khalil Amani. .

That’s sad that your movie options are limited. It’s almost the same in Chicago, though. The movie theater closest my house is only decent during the day. At night, it’s full of thuggish teenagers just looking for fights. In fact, the last time I went there- 6 years ago- a dude tried to fight me just for looking at him from the corner of my eye.

Its crazy when you think about it. Brooklyn would be one of the largest cities in the country if it were one yet there are only 4 movie options. I think it is in large part due to the wealth of other entertainment options in New York City but its sad none the less.

  3. 4PL says:

They need to open up Kenmore Just for the Notorious release, Oh wait I forgot it’s now a modells

  4. Juan says:

I did forget one…Its also showing at the Pavilion at Prospect Park. But that theater is small and wack. Disregard.

    We are, We Are, notorious

I am so going to see it, Saturday, and I want to see it in Brooklyn, but unless they play it at BAM for a week or so, than I am going to Battery park, always seats and its big, I may go to Harlem, black movies at Magic is always great, you get to hear everybody sing along, and some people say that didnt happen, I remember that, and all the rest, I may go see this twice, once with wifey at Battery Park, once dolo on Linden, love the hood

LINDEN You’re bugging. way too hood for me. Keep that Battery Park on the low. I love the spot.

    • I’m with you on avoiding Linden. I went there to see one of those Asian flicks that come out years ago that had subtitles. The guy at the box office told the dude buying the tickets that the movie had subtitles. He first asked, “what is that?” And then when he found out he said, “I gotta read?” I knew from that point on I was not to go back there… Ignorant folk.
      .
I won’t see the movie until maybe three week later. I can’t deal with folk like that the first couple of weeks. And I’m going to Battery on a Sunday, late. Not as many people out.
