MARKETING MATTERS: Soulja Boy’s ‘Let’s Go Platinum In A Week’ Campaign
The Internet Marketing Guru says YES WE CAN…Go Platinum.
Even though we might not be able to stand Soulja Boy as an artist with his little dances we’ve gotta call a spade a spade. He’s managed to take a free internet video and build a career all the while helping YouTube ascend to the height it’s at now, then he managed to fake his way to a record deal with YUM! Shoes and now it looks like he’s attempting to use his marketing prowess to convince his fans and haters alike to help his forthcoming album, “iSouljaBoyTellEm” go platinum. Like so many others, he’s building off the hype surrounding the election and has launched a “campaign” via his newest video blog called the “Let’s Go Platinum In A Week.” initiative.
Its very interesting to watch this kid work because its quite clear and obvious that he understands marketing and is very good at it. I’m not a fan of his dances or music but then again he doesn’t care. He KNOWS his target market and knows how to reach them and influence their buying behavior. Perhaps most importantly…he brands EVERYTHING. I would imagine given his gifts in the area that he should consider going to Wharton (University Of Pennsylvania) Business School or something if not to learn…to TEACH! I don’t usually jump on an artists tip but its amazing how he’s built this mini-empire completely off the strength of marketing with absolutely no money or musical talent. Check S.Boy’s “platform” for his campaign. Funny Stuff!

nope
ahhh give him a break. lol. His music and dances are terrible but you gotta respect his hustle no? lol.
I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with you, Juan! This loser has no business teaching Marketing at Bobby Brown Community College! There’s more to marketing than being good at MySpace. I’m actually VERY surprised that you feel such a way. But more in a private e-mail. I don’t want to seem disrespectful, but WOW! Soulja Boy teaching marketing. The little nigg doesn’t have respect for himself to eat enough food to look healthy. What an insult to folks like me who toil hard in the field. Very insulting, Juan! It’s like you stuck your middle finger up at me.
Teaching? This kid hasn’t even bothered to get a GED yet.
I love getting you fired up Zack. YEAH I SAID IT TEACH! In my estimation, there are a lot of folks in the Marketing industry that overcomplicate the field. He’s been successful at identifying his niche and being very influential within it. You can’t deny that…its a fact. So what Myspace isn’t a viable marketing tool?! Check the stats broham.
Then he needs to teach you! YEAH I SAID IT!
Maybe he can get your Technorati ranking from 28,000 (although mine is 276,000) up to his in the top 1,000.
I’m not one of those folks you speak of. I’m a guy who busts his ass everyday to make it in Marketing to be “rewarded” by discouraging posts such as this one. This has GOT to be a joke, Juan. In fact, you are disrespecting yourself feeling this way. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Soulja Boy and marketing guru in the same fuckin’ sentence? WOW!
It’s your blog and all, but WOW! And Myspace is NOT the only effective marketing tool because it’s hard to evaluate how well the message was received. Other than album sales, you can’t assess whether somebody is adding him as a friend because they like him or because they are nosy. But to each his own. But riddle me this…why don’t y’all update YOUR myspace page. Get back to me on that…
Ahhh I would call you the riddler but I’ll give you another name “THE HECKLER.” You’re the guy behind the backstop yelling “swing batter, batter, batter.” lol.
.
Perhaps I went too far by calling him a genius, clearly he is not that but he’s effective. To be honest it might not even be HIM whose developed these ideas. It could very well be his team in which case I’d give him EVEN more credit for as Russell Simmons says “finding his (marketing) rabbi.”
.
Given the current economic climate and the downturn in the music industry his movements can only be classified as innovative. Granted it didn’t take much…its not very difficult to supplant payola as the most hottest music marketing tactic. He’s using a little marketing savvy to “get it popping.” Tip your cap to the kid.
.
As for the MySpace you got us there. I’ll tell Mike you said so. Am I mistaken in thinking it was more so YouTube that was responsible for his success not MySpace? In any event, good Work Zack I like the challenge.
Oh yeah one more thing…Technorati can go kiss my ass. They’re bullsh*t. Until they step their support and ping game up they can’t be counted upon as an industry standard.
I guess I’ll step in here and add my two cents. Let me start with Technorati. Juan is right, Technorati has largely lost its credibility. Several months ago I actually told the HN staff to stop paying so much attention to our rank because it just doesn’t mean as much as it used to and I’d rather them concentrate on other stats such as pageviews and RSS subscribers.
Though Juan is the CEO of Highbrid Outdoor, the buck stops at me when it comes to Highbrid Nation. I spear head the marketing of the site with the assistance of Juan and Marcus. So if one was to criticize how this site is marketed, that should be directed towards me. And if someone wants to praise this site for being one of the fastest rising urban blogs on the net, you can give that to me too, lol.
As for Soulja Boy and MySpace. MySpace is indeed an excellent place to market yourself…at least it was. Soulja Boy works MySpace in such a way that it landed him a record deal. MySpace actually helped HN get a lot of its popularity also though, as you’ve said we’ve ignored it as of late. MySpace is on the decline, already being surpassed by Facebook as the leading social network, and is oversaturated so I’ve moved our efforts over to newer and more cutting edge services. We still do market on MySpace but not as much. Soulja Boy I think is doing the same. He is still on MySpace but has turned most of his attention towards YouTube.
Now, as for whether Soulja Boy or the people behind him are marketing geniuses. I guess we’ll know for sure if he goes platinum in a week. One thing that is for sure, if there wasn’t some serious marketing power behind the kid then we wouldn’t be hearing about him so much.
im a big fan of soulja boy…dec 16 cop that..
he is making hip-hop fun again..and he is mad young he still has alot to offer… his music does want to make you dance and swag you up a bit while dusting off the haters…

Dec 16 is my dad’s b-day. I have FAR more important things to do and buy that day.
But thanks for entertaining me with your wit.
