Smithsonian Houses Items From Va. Obama Campaign Office For Exhibit
What would YOU like the Smithsonian exhibit to look like?
Smithsonian curators for the the National Museum of African American History and Culture have annexed furniture and other items from the Falls Church, Virginia field office which once was Obama’s presidential headquarters in that state. The items included which included election maps, strategy boards, campaign literature and even a Lazy Boy chair are earmarked for use in a future exhibit in the museum which is slated to open in 2015 on the National Mall.
Virginia, of course was a key swing state for Obama’s win. He was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win there since 1964. The state’s campaign office fouced on reaching a culturally and ethnically diverse range of voters to help elect the first black president. Many of their campaign signs read “Koreans for Obama” and “Latinos for Obama.”
“In this very uplifting way, it seemed to be a reflection of the spectrum of people who make up the larger American community,” said Jacquelyn Serwer, the museum’s chief curator. “We want people, whether you’re African American or not, to see yourself in the stories we’re telling.”
The museum also is looking to grab objects from a campaign office in Colorado, to show the differing appeals from Virginia to the Rocky Mountains, and may pursue items from Obama’s campaign headquarters in Chicago, Serwer said.
It is quite clear that the Obama mania has yet to subside. It begs the question how much is too much and what is most important. Its clear that we must all commemorate (thanks Zack) the historical event but how? There are so many black history relics that unfortunately are missing given the maltreatment of our ancestors. So let me ask you, The Nation, 40 years from now when you venture to Washington D.C. with your grandchildren, what would you like the the President Obama exhibit at the Smithsonian to look like?
