Behind the Scene Footage of ‘Greatest Day’ XXL Cover Surfaces
Lost after 10 YEARS it surfaces
Many of you may remember this XXL magazine cover which was emblematic of the January 1959, Art Kane portrait in Esquire magazine which is recognized as one of the true relics in jazz history. Kane, just a rookie at the time called up and photographed every major New York jazz musician (57 in total) he knew of to pose for the now famous photo on the steps of 17E on 126th street.
Fast forward to 1998 when then upstart XXL magazine wanted to redo the “Great Day in Harlem” shoot with their own “Greatest Day in Hip Hop.” The original brought together the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk and Lester Young while XXL‘s historic recreation brought in 200 plus hip-hop greats which flowed over three stoops. The new photo marked the 40th anniversary of Art Kane’s famous photo and put a new force in XXL magazine on the map.
Now after 10 years in purgatory footage from that shoot now surfaces:
Shout to Underground Hip Hop for the Video.
