Janet Left Def Jam Because They Were Trying To Turn Her Into Sade?

Posted by Mike "Evorgleb" Belgrove

This sounds so crazy I believe it.

Janet Jackson has revealed the real reason why she left Def Jam. According to her, Def Jam wanted her to become like a second coming of Sade. I’m not making this up. Here’s what she said:

“There were some people who didn’t like the direction I took with this album (Discipline).” “They wanted me to sound more like Sade, but I’m not ready for that just yet. I love doing dance songs and I think my fans expect that of me.”

What the hell is going on at Def Jam? Discipline was her best album in years and as usual was marketed horribly. But it was because of the direction of the album? Things haven’t been right since they dumbed out and put Jay-Z in charge of things. It has been all downhill from there. Of course Jay-Z left the sinking ship only to be replaced by Shakir Stewart who has since committed suicide. If what Janet is saying is true, they have idiots at the helm over at Def Jam. Janet the next Sade? That’s like trying to make Ashanti the next Anita Baker.

It’s sad to see such an iconic part of hip hop history is being run into the ground the way it is.

I’m not going to be mad at Def Jam for anything they did with Janet. She’s a weirdo by association with the Jackson family. I could imagine the types of under reported nonsense that went on with her. So what they disagreed with her on the direction of her career. Good move by getting rid of her. Addition via subtraction. She’s still sexy though.
