‘Karate Kid’ Remake Doomed As Will Smith’s Son, Jayden, Named the Lead
The Smiths!
Well the blogosphere is ablaze behind today’s announcement that Will Smith’s son will star in the new Karate Kid remake. Allow me to preface this hate filled rant by saying I like Jayden Smith. He’s a cute kid. As far as his acting prowess I’m going to have to differ to his subpar performance in Pursuit of Happyness. He was horrible. Granted it could be that his Will Smith is just that an accomplished an actor that he basically drowned his own son out of the role but i’m somehow reminded of a recent scene watching Vinny Chase (HBO’s Entourage) getting outshined by he co-star in his newest movie gig.
So the announcement begs the question…why? Does Mini-Smith have a advanced black belt in Tae-Kwon Do? I doubt it. When you think of the Karate Kid you envision that baby faced self-esteemless white teenager. So clearly the Jayden does not physically draw comparasions to the original protagonist.
So lets recap, no acting skills and youg black boy attempting to revitalize the role of an older white teenage legend. Oh wait…here it is in the small print…the movie will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment with Jerry Weintraub (from the originals) keeping them honest.
For such a risky proposition as remaking a cult classic like Karate Kid its a shame that it would literally boil down to politics but it has. This movie has “skip” and “straight to DVD” written all over it. Its a shame because the idea had some potential. Shame on you Will!
UPDATE: Oh and before you go saying I’m always hating…I’m not the only one scratching my head.

doesn’t make any sense at all, str8 to smith
The remake doesn’t have to be an exact replica of the original, even if Weintraub is on board. Maybe some of the elements of the Karate Kid movie can remain intact while other elements are updated. Have not seen the movie, but know it’s about bullying, so maybe the bullying aspect can remain, but the karate stuff can be thrown out.
what about the fact that Jayden can’t act?
& u can’t leave the karate out…it’s “karate kid” lol
Well if I remember correctly in the original quadrilogy of films. the Karate kid was actually only a “kid” in the first film and was actually an adult in the second and third (in the fourth he was replaced by a girl). So maybe the logic here is that they are using Jayden while he’s a young kid so the door is open for there to be sequels where he is still young enough to be a kid.
yaaaaawn.
