Confessions of A Revolutionary: A Black Panther’s Thoughts On Obama’s Victory

Posted by Juan

Patriotism for the Unpatriotic

Huey P. Newton

I recently asked someone very close to me to speak about her thoughts on Barack Obama’s victory and what it all meant.  She’s older than most of the Highbrid Nation demographic and experienced the height of the civil rights movement as a child and the Black Power movement as a teenage radical, A Black Panther.  Although she is much wiser, spiritual and is highly acclaimed in her profession, the revolutionary spirit still burns bright as evidenced by her following diary:

Last night (Tuesday) when America did the right thing I “got hope!” I have never been a patriotic person. The racist policies and practices of this country made it difficult for me to profess my loyalty. However, I am a Christian and I believe the Lord’s promises one of which is “…for if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and heal their land…” I believe that the prayers of the righteous reached God and Barak Obama is the beginning of that healing!

As many calls as I received last night of exuberant joy, I received the same number this morning with concern for draconian policies that have and continue to extinguish the lives of Black folk; policies from healthcare and domestic violence to sanctions on Zimbabwe and Cuba. What seems to be lost between last night and this morning was the “we”. President Obama’s victory was not won alone. His victory reflected the thoughtful and courageous counsel of compassionate analytical strategist with prognostic visions for what America could be. Wise counsel garnered from lessons learned from shed blood of American atrocities too heinous to go forgotten and wisdom to profound to attempt life without hope.

It is no mistake that we have been chosen for this time. Barack Obama has been prepared to lead this healing, the stage has been set and the planet awaits YOU!

I couldn’t agree with you more mom.  Thanks for doing this and thank you to all those like you whose shoulders we stand upon.   Salute!

I hope the spirit holds. Active participation within the system is the only way we can make lasting changes; and we now have someone at the top who is willing to embrace the necessary change.
