BUSINESS MATTERS: Partnership Lets you Stream Netflix Library to your TV Through TiVo DVRs

Posted by Juan

If TiVo and Netflix weren’t convenient enough…they give you this.

Netflix and TiVo

There’s no secret that the world is getting more and more convenient. I was out running earlier this morning and realized with that it becomes harder to stay fit. At risk of assisting the couch potato contingency further develop their cirucular physique TiVo Inc. and Netflix, Inc. today announced a new partnership which would allow TiVo subscribers access to the entire Netflix library directly from their TV sets.

Sources say Netflix the partnership is in response to subscriber complaints that the walk to their mailboxes to retrieve their selections was far to burdensome.

The new service will be BETA tested in several thousand households today and available to everyone by December. Ahhh just in time for you to give those TiVo’s and Netflix subscriptions for the holidays.

According to the release, the new feature will be offered at no additional charge to customers who subscribe to both services.

I don’t have TIVO, but I assume this is done via your cable internet access? (I can’t see them transferring movie by way of a phone connection).
.
One thing that concerns me is that we’re headed for a conflict between technology and the cable providers.
.
Comcast and several other companies have now put download limits on their customers internet usage. This comes at a time when Microsoft, for example, is trying to shift Windows and Office over to ‘web based’ applications. In other words: high-speed internet access will be required to run windows, excel, word, etc.
.
In the long run, it looks like another way that the consumer is going to be pulled apart by both ends. It ranks right up there with the BS about how you buy virus protection software, then have to pay another $50/year to keep it running.
.
Well, at least the economy is OK where everyone can afford it. Oh…that’s right, I forgot.

I have TiVo and absolutely love it. Yes it does download from the internet. It already downloads TiVo specific content to the device in off peak hours. You have the option to view it or not. They also have a library of new songs that you can subscribe/purchase and listen to sort of like iTunes. I’m guess you’d need to put in the request to Netflix via remote or online and there might be some lag but yes eventually the movies will show up on your “Now Playing Menu” Pretty cool if you ask me.
.
I’m wondering if that adds to your disk drive limit…If you read the press release they use the term “Stream” which would tend to indicate that movies are housed on their servers and not saved on your hard drive. That technology is very ill if they can pull it off.

I’m curious if this new service offered through TiVo is similar to the Roku player from Netflix that you guys wrote on a few months ago. If so, the access that Netflix provideds is only to a limited amount of their movies. In that case, don’t expect to get the latest movies to watch.

Great point…I’ll look into it further and update.
