D.L. Hughley’s Show Has Aired And People Are Not Pleased At All
Fan reaction seems to range from disappointment to outrage.
Not too long ago I did a post on how D.L. Hughley was getting is own show on CNN. I talked about how the show may go over perfectly on the news network even though it seemed like an odd fit.
Well this past Saturday I sat down and watched the debut of D.L. Hughley Breaks The News to see how off the mark I was. I was indeed off the mark. Better yet, D.L. was off the mark. If I was to sum up the first episode I’d say, “Train wreck”. I’m not the only one either. Everywhere I go people are talking about D.L.’s show. I’ve heard disappointment. I’ve heard outrage. I’m yet to hear anything positive.
The show started off with a monologue that just wasn’t funny at all. Maybe I would have laughed a little bit but I had literally just heard all of those jokes the hour before on Larry King Live as D.L. appeared to plug his show. It was almost embarrassing. I couldn’t understand why he would use the exact same jokes on Larry King knowing that his show was airing next with him saying the same stuff. How dumb is that?
Then the show went it to some skits. This is where it got really bad. D.L. tends to dwell on race in his comedy in a way that may have been cool in the 90’s but in today’s age kinda makes me uncomfortable especially knowing that the majority of the viewers were white. It was almost “coon-esque”. One skit had Ashy Larry of Dave Chappellle fame playing a pimp named “Freddie Mack” (I’m sure I don’t have to tell you where that went) and was calling people b*tches left and right. Just didn’t seem right for a network like CNN.
As the show went on and he sat down with guests, things got off the topic of race and actually became entertaining. Unfortunately by that time a large amount of people probably changed the channel.
I’ll watch again this weekend just to see the overhaul that’s given as I know CNN can’t be happy with some of the stuff that appeared on the show. I know they were trying to capture the magic of shows like Daily Show and Cobert Report but this isn’t working. If nothing changes, this may be a very short lived program.

That’s crazy. AverageBro (AverageBro.com) just blogged about this today.
I saw some clips of the show on Dimewars, but couldn’t make it through them.
The whole idea of giving D.L. a show was a train wreck to begin with. “Negro, this is CNN not BET. Get it together!”
I told you that D.L. was gonna dwell on race? And why? He is a true testament that “Favor Ain’t Fair” (a church saying). For him to be illiterate until his adult hood and STILL manage to make more money than cats like me with 1 1/2 degrees shows how God can help anybody.
So, D.L. needs to chill with all that race whining until he walks in my shoes for a day.
They probably would have been better off acquiring the right to Chocolate News David G.
That show is awful. I dont expect that to last long either. David Allen Grier is like the only In Living Color alumni who has not been able to turn his time on the show in to big sucess. He sucks at life.
I think the D.L.’s show was absolutely disgusting! As an African American I am so ashamed that another African American would disparage his culture when so many Blacks have fought and died throughout history to overcome such stereotypes! Calling this comedy is insulting to any decent human being! Categorize this under “Birth of a Nation” and Minstrel Shows!
Shame on you CNN to allow such a program! You have done a great disservice to yourselves and ALL Americans!
Ok I cannot believe I am going to say this but I too did not like the show, but not for those reasons listed above. Zack, the benefit of education is being educated and people become educated through a variety of methods not all of them are through college. I say this as someone that teaches at a major university.
I would also like to say that race jokes have a place. It is ok to joke about race and laugh at people. Stereotypes are funny. But CNN is not the format for this type show! And more importantly as an African American I felt nothing but anger that D.L. would put forth that image of Black people on a news network during a time when we need non-blacks to not get hung up on stereotypes. This is our civil rights movement. When Barack says that this is a movement he means it. We have to stick together and not give non-blacks any reason to question or fear this change that is coming.
I think YOU missed the lesson, teacher. All I said was the D.L. should not complain because he has benefited from life without the university system. And I’m not mad at him- as long as he realizes that.
Plus, he’s not funny at all. I think CNN is actually making it obvious that their intentions were suspect with the Black in America special.
The fact that they gave D.L. Hughley a show just means that blacks will only get opportunities at the expense of their own dignity.
It sickens me. No hard feelings, though. But please don’t try to school me on anything except why you are university teacher who wrote what you wrote. Thanks for understanding!
I just don’t find D.L. funny. I never found Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence particularly funny either. If someone decides to not vote for Obama because of this, then they never believed in him in the first place. I don’t support Obama for any other reason than he’s a Democrat. I know a lot of folks feel the same way. If Obama was a Republican saying the exact same thing he’s saying now, you would treat him like you did Colin Powell and Condi Rice, like sellouts. You are just as partisan as I am. And most of this country is the same way. No unfunny tv show starring a black comedian is going to change that.
Dave Chappelle? Martin Lawrence? Not Funny? Your speaking hieroglyphics to me w/ that one..
Did U miss Chappelle show season 2? You so crazy? Runteldat? lol….nevermind anonymous
I don’t want to spend too much time on this because I need sleep so I will try to make this brief. I am not partisan, I am black. Now call that what you want but that is what you read. I support Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice. I support Black people, poor people, historically disadvantaged people. And not everyone “believes” in Barack. Not everyone “believes” in politicians. I am not a Barack kool aid sipper. Juan can attest to that. And we will need the vote of some nonbelievers, in order for Barack to win. So Yes, a black comedian making an ass of our people on a reputable news source is a potential problem.
I thought CNN was a news network. Now I remember why I haven’t watched them in years. I have tried them all and keep going back to FoxNews. I do check in from time to time with the other networks to see what kind of garbage they are shoving into the minds of unsuspecting Americans. The mainstream media has a liberal agenda and journalism has died. I see this show as another attempt to shove someones values and lifestyle onto other people. This is not mainstream America. The African-American Community has much more to offer but the liberal left media does not support the best of what Americans have to offer. This is another example of the far-left brainwashing that is taking place in our country. There was time when people were encouraged to question authority with respect. But unfortunately innocent people are made an example of if they question authority or potential future authority (just ask Joe the plummer). You would think this Russia with what the media has done to this guy for asking a question we all should have asked months ago. You should question why a news network would sponsor this kind of garbage. To take a position of apathy and not question why a news network would think a criminal that abuses women (pimp) is funny is truely unAmerican.
The thing that bothers me the most is people look at these comedy news shows to get informed on whats happening in the world. It’s clear to me that these type of shows are far left and I’m assuming that D.L.’s program is no diferent. I like D.L. as a comedian but find alot of his politcial views skewed and some not based on any facts but just assumptions and heavily focused on race.
Ok, I think I may need to defend D.L. a little bit here. His show is not a step backwards for the civil rights movement. It’s not going to keep Barack from getting elected. All it is is a late night comedy news program that comes on on Sat. when very few people are watching tv anyway. CNN is just trying to fill out their schedule with new stuff during the hours when people arent usually watching their network. And let’s keep in mind that comedy and news are generally synonomous these days. Most young people reportedly get their news from sources like The Daily Show. CNN is very smart to try to tap that audience. Now let’s get back to D.L.. The man is actually a good choice for such a show. He has a great back story with the whole not being able to read until adulthood thing and he’s actually pretty smart and fairly learned when it comes to current events as he has proved in his many times as a guest panelist on various news shows. Though He’s not the funniest comedian, he works for this kind of show. The show just needs some changes. Less emphasis on race and better writing. Maybe even going live though that may be a stretch. CNN is still advertising the show pretty hard so I’m lead to believe they haven’t given up yet. I think the next episode will be very telling.
Like I said
Young people are not the people that we need to worry about. Its the older people that watch CNN are ok with Black people but nervous about what Black people might do if in office. So his show to me is risky. Will he destroy the entire campaign, NO just as Hillary was not tearing apart the party. Democrats are more united now. But D.L.’s show on CNN is concerning and it could be a problem. We have 4 years to prove that a Black man can run this country. We don’t need this show on CNN.
CNN is thinking beyond this election. They didn’t give him a show “for the election”. They gave him a show for the foreseeable future.
