50 Cent New Exec. Producer for JMJ Docu-flick
To help market film, limited copies will be packaged with his December “Before I Self Destruct” LP.
In effort to help promote and develop the documentary “Two Turntables and a Microphone,” about the life of the late, great Jam Master Jay from Run DMC 50 Cent has been recruited as the new executive producer of the film. Although the film has been nearly five years in the making, Jay’s cousin, Phonz, the flicks mastermind is hoping to piggyback the potential buzz surrounding 50’s upcoming release/ soundtrack, “Before I self Distruct.” Fans who purchase the album will also be privvy to the JMJ documentary which will come will come packaged in deluxe editions of the upcoming album.
So is that the only reason 50’s involved…for promo? According to fif, it’s more than just a business move. In the following interview with MTV he said he came aboard after doing an interview for the documentary . He learned a lot of Jam Master Jay early in his career, and he hasn’t forgotten about it.
“He was somebody who impacted my career — you can say in the biggest way,” 50 explained to MTV. ” ‘Cause in my career, I was just in the infant stages, developing my song structure around Jay. The first time I was in the studio, [it was] with intentions of recording songs for an album with Jam Master Jay. He taught me how to count bars. I could rap already. I knew what I wanted to say, but he was showing me how I had to get it out around the right time. [He would say,] ‘That sounds crazy, you have to say it earlier in this verse.’ “
Although it’s been 6 years already since Jam Master Jay was gunned down in his Queen studio the details still reamain very sketchy. Like many of us we’ve often wondered will the witnesses ever speak? Are they scared or were they in on the hit. For he feels “Two Turntables and a Microphone” helps to make things a little clearer.
“It’s not a random act of violence,” 50 said. “People just don’t walk in your studio, shoot and kill you with several other people around, and no one knows anything. I believe the documentary sheds light on it — a little bit. It creates a clearer picture of what actually happened at that point. People just heard, ‘Jam Master Jay got shot.’ They don’t understand the circumstances. [The film] creates some clarity.”
