MF Doom Says He’s The Only One Under The Mask
In a confusing statement MF says that even at the wack shows, that’s him under the mask.
I did a story I while ago about how it appeared as though fake MF Dooms were showing up in the place of the real deal. At first is would only at appearance gigs. However there seemed to even be performances where a man who looked nothing like MF Doom was on stage wearing his mask and butchering his lyrics. For a long time the was no official word from Doom on what was really going on. Now in the new issue of Wax Poetics, MF Doom comments on the reality of the “MF Doom Bots” that people have been seeing.
“I did some show, wrecked it, girls climbing up onstage and shit. That was the first time that happened–but we was rocking, right? Somebody from the label was going to be there. I was like, ‘Cool, he saw the show, and it was wrecked. Next couple of days, I speak to him, and he was like, ‘Good show, but a lot of people are saying it wasn’t you!’
I lost fifty-nine pounds last year on some healthy shit, and I’m out there busting my ass, and niggas is still saying that shit? Niggas is caught up in the character part.
Looking at it has nothing to do with what it sounds like. A blind person could be at the show and feel it clearly, but don’t see nothing of it. Don’t matter what the shit look like. Look, was niggas rockin’ or was niggas rockin’?”
Now these comments are a bit confusing. It’s almost like in one breath he’s saying that he looks different now due to weight loss and in the next breath, he hints that it may not be him all the time but it shouldn’t matter because people should just be concerned with how it sounds (Lip Syncing maybe?).
And here’s one of the things that really messes with me about this. Witnesses have said that these “MF Doom Bots” are far from on point at shows and often don’t even remember the lyrics to Doom’s songs.
Below is a video taken a while back at the Rock The Bells show. Notice how “MF Doom” seems lost on stage and how the crowd quickly feel they are being duped.
What do you guys think?
