The Barack Obama Irony: Fans On VIBE.com Vote Eminem the Best Rapper Alive?!
If Hip Hop can help elect the first black president, a talented white emcee can be the best
The folks at VIBE never thought their “The Best Rapper Alive” online poll feature would receive such a huge response but when all was said and done over 920,000 votes were counted and Eminem rained supreme. The poll which included the likes of Kanye West, Rick Ross, Nas and T.I. was conducted in a March Madness bracket like format. Starting in July, fans began voting on head-to-head knock out rounds single elimination style until the winner was announced yesterday. Slim Shady won with 69 percent of the votes in the finals.
Now while I’d like to sit here and get into a debate about why Eminem is not deserving of the best rapper title, I won’t. Instead I’ll just bask in the fact that the people have spoken, almost 1 Million of them and they finally realize that it’s not Lil Wayne (who finished out the final 2).
Naturally its virtually blasphemous for Hip Hop to not give the nod to Jay-Z given the contribution he’s made to the game and his body of work over 12 years strong. I think given Jay’s resume he should have at least been given a bye to the finals or taken out the equation all together as a recognition of his prowess, leagues above all the other challengers. But at the end of the day I honestly can’t be too mad about the results as Jay fell to the second slot behind a worthy challenger, Eminem.
It almost seems ironic that at a time when the country’s financial integrity is crumbling, Hip Hop has been more united than it ever has been behind one man, Barack Obama. The man who would become so many first for this country not the least of which would be the first black president. So at a time when Hip Hop is doing its black pride thing, they elect the white dude for top emcee honors. No one will take anything away from Eminem’s skills but his skin color like Barack Obama has been a barrier that each has been facing their entire lives. If that’s not enough Eminem will officially be declared in their November issue in which Barack Obama will grace the cover. Its irony but so apropos
“It’s obviously an honor to have won the fans’ support by being voted the Best Rapper Alive,” Eminem said in response to his victory. “I don’t think that there is any one rapper that is simply the best though. Everyone who was in consideration and many others are the best at certain things, and at what they do. But since Vibe’s offering the distinction, hell yeah I’ll accept!”
My sentiments exactly

Ive often heard the same and its been from foreigners that Emenim is the best rapper. Talk about irony. I think Obie Trice has been slept on, but hopefully he’ll be coming out with some new projects.
I also think Obie is slept on.
he’s very talented you’re right.
Sounds like a better name for this poll would have been “most popular rapper alive”. When you look at it like that, it all makes sense. Eminem is the most popular rapper. Mainly because he’s white and white people seem to be the main consumers of rap music.
As for the whole hip hop crowd being all behind barack but voting for em. Once again it’s because he’s white. The “hip hop crowd” aren’t the ones behind Barack, its black people. The “hip hop crowd is made up mostly of white people though the faces of hip hop have always been black” (kinda like the NBA, most players are black but most fans are white).
We just have to remember that black people does not equal hip hop crowd.
uh…don’t know about that. Hip Hop has had just as much an impact on the wildly successful campaign of Barack Obama as maybe Oprah had in kick starting it. Who cares if they’re white or black. I’m not addressing that.
Will you address the fact that white people like Em largly because he’s white and if the majority of people who voted are also white then there should be no surprised as to who they picked?
don’t know about this pick, and keep sleepin’ lol
The best rapper alive voted by the people is Eminem. The people have spoken. Em is the peoples choice not because of the color of his skin but because of his skill. To say he was only chosen by the white hip-hop audience because he is white discards Em’s talent and you just cant deny the boys talent. Even more so because his “I-dont-give-damn” persona left you wondering who and how he will appeal to the hip-hop audience, white, black, asian, or indifferent. So, he let his skills do his talking and thats all you can ask for from any rapper.
On the other hand, Jay is undeniably the best to ever do it.(You know I gotta support Jay, its the only time I ever leave a comment) I dont wish to list the stats because I’m busy with spring ‘09. But Jay said it best, “I am not a rapper, I’m a hustler, just so happen I know how to rap.” and he has been given us his street reports on hustlin ever since.
Adifuluv thanks for taking the time. You’re absolutely right. Em is very skilled. I’m not denying that. I’m not saying anything about his skin color other than the irony that a country that has traditionally voted white is not poised with its most popular choice being a black guy at the same time that a culture/music which is personified by black artists chooses a white man as their favorite emcee. Skills aside.
Thats true, its very ironic when you put both Barack and Eminem’s skills aside and put attention to their race. Is it like Dr. King’s dream becoming reality? we are very close.
But unfortunately, yet so far. Good ish Adifuluv. I like that kind of commentary.
all i have to say is i’m disappointed on how much everyone on highbrid is constantly riding jay-z dick. he could have ran with that title(with the help of skills and popularity), but ONLY if he would have stayed retired while he was on top. now its like he’s fighting for his spot back. which doesn’t seem to be easy. he’s lost it and he’s slowly getting it back but i speaking as a HARD jay fan would have rather him stay gone…..the BLACK ALBUM….CLASSIC!!!. another thing…this isn’t a black or white issue and when you discuss it like it is one than you are no better than the people that are voting just because of color rather than the issues!! and before i go….neither jay-z or eminem are the best rapper….its NAS hands down!!! he’s the only one that has the ability to make us dance, make us think, and makes us feel something. last rapper to do that was PAC!!!! ENOUGH SAID
Wait hold on a second. Yall can’t have it both ways here lol. Yall got on me earlier this week for saying I don’t like any artists now i’m riding Jay-Z sack?
Now I agree, Nas is a fair argument. He’s a great emcee but I disagree he’s the best RAPPER! This whole poll is debateable there’s no right answer.
Now, if you read the post please note I’m not hating on on Em by any stretch. I’m just citing the irony of the fact that a culture which is personified by black folks which is attempting to elect a black president for the first time in history says that a white rapper is their best musical representative. IRONY! That’s all I’m saying.
