I’ve always said that hate is a positive thing, it means that someone cares and is paying attention.  After seeing the pictures below I’ve begun to change my tune…and rethink that philosophy.  We as a nation have prided ourselves on making strides with regard to racism, gender bias, gay bashing etc.  Although that might be true I’ve come to realize that HATE in its most concentrated forms can dissolve years of work an effort put forth by the those that care.

If you’ll remember a while back we covered the story of a misguided young lady who purchased a T-Shirt that said “Obama is my Slave.”  She promptly and very appropriately had her ass whopped in the street when she wore it.  The Manhattan, NY native then turned around and decided to sue the designer, Apollo Braun citing that the T-Shirt endangered her well-being. (You can check out some of his repulsive shirts at his website) Who knows what happened with the case, honestly its silly.  But last night I received a call from my younger sister Nikki, a medical student at Howard University.  She was in a state of out rage and just short of tears behind this new Bruan design.

For those of you who are unfamiliar (as I was) Malia is Obama’s 10-year old daughter.  Although, Malia is the daughter of a very public figure she is clearly defenseless and for those members of the Nation who are parents, could you imagine your outrage if that was your son or daughter’s name on the T-shirt.  In the grand scheme of things, sure the shirt isn’t a threat its silly but what does that say about the mindset of its designer or those who might buy or wear the shirt?

Barack Obama is running for office on the platform of CHANGE.  Change for the economy, change in foreign policy, change for the working class.  But as we learned in physics ever action has an equal and opposite reaction.  In changing the aforementioned for the better he’s cultivated the evils of the past, the racist views shared by some of those that supported institutions like slavery, Aparthied and Jim Crow.  So as we celebrate change we must keep our third eye open for more of the same.
