Urban Comm. Purchases NiggaSpace.com: Benefit from Residual Traffic of Defunct Site

Posted by Juan

Inherit the traffic

Niggaspace

For those of you who have been down with the Nation since its inception or thereabouts you’ll remember a story we covered in quite a bit of depth concerning the controversial social networking site, niggaspace.com.  The site which appeared to be a haven for white kids posing as black people in effort to mock them. There was even a poll on the site went as far as to ask the question “How Black Are You?” with the answer options being “Brake yoursilf nigga!”, “I’m not black”, “Niggaspace Emo” and “Creole.”

Mike “Evorgleb” Belgrove first brought the issue before the nation and the response was overwhelming.  The Highbrid Nation led the charge as the Blogosphere descended on the site which prided itself as being a place for niggas in effort to shut it down.

At one point there was a disclaimer publsihed on the site by its operator “Tyrone” stating:

“This site is in no way meant to be racist. Moreover, it’s supposed to bring a community of people together, rather than apart. A common endearing term used by many black people is, “nigga” not to be confused with a different and offensive term, “nigger”. The word, “nigga” is in rap songs, daily conversations, on TV, etc. yet the word still has so much mixed emotions attached.

Well in large part due to the public outcry of Highbrid Nation and the subsequent bad press the site was forced to shut down and move is operations to holla.us.  HOWEVER the domain continued to draw hits…hits and more hits.

So today Urban Communications announced that they acquired the Niggaspace.com domain.  If its not bad enough that they did it…they announced it via the following press release like this is something everyone should know.

Baltimore-based Urban Communications, LLC (UC) today announced the acquisition of NiggaSpace.com, a social network visited over 7,000,000 times in 2007 according to Google Analytics.

“Urban Communications will soon be the number one trafficked network within the online African American community,” said Kenny Clash, President, (UC). “Not only do Urban Communication users set the trends, they constantly want to associate with others in the community with similar interests.”

“We plan to introduce NiggaSpace.com users to better technology, which includes better enhanced content filters and privacy controls. It is remarkable that within the past 72 hours more than 30,000 people typed inthe domain name NiggaSpace.com,” said Patrick Nagle, Product Development,(UC).

“Out of the 20 million African Americans online, 15 percent use or are aware of NiggaSpace.com,” said Chanda Cole, VP Marketing (UC).

I can understand the business of the move.  Hey why not benefit from the residual traffic of a now defunct controversial media whirlwind but now you inherit the furry of those that were offended by the orignial owners.  Believe me the premise behind the Niggaspace social network was very offensive but I think the most outrageous aspect of the entire outfit is the name and domain.  Regardless of how Urban Communications chooses to sugar coat the content they place on the site…they’ll still have to deal with the fury of The Highbrid Nation and others will tell you…that’s not a great place to stand.

its business that how you have to look at it. no room really for moral issues in the business world. Its all about the green. So on one hand I am not mad at UC. But on another I am b/c of the history. The task they face is to erace the previous image and revamp it with their new technology and show its users and public that they have a diff agenda. but on the flip side doing that may hurt their numbers. like i said business is business no room for morals obligations.

They would probably just be better served putting a few ads on the page and leave it at that. Folks are coming to the site from residual hits so let the revenue come that way.
