Spike Lee’s ‘Miracle’ Comes Under Fire. His Screenwriter Cries Like A Bitch!

Roman group outraged by Spike’s depiction of controversial Nazi massacre of 560 Italian civilians

Miracle

Spike Lee’s new movie “Miracle at St. Anna” has hit the big screen and has everyone whose seen it buzzing.  Unfortunately for Lee, “everyone” includes a group of Roman reporters who are pulling his and screenwriter James McBride’s card on the accuracy of a  scene that links an antifascist Italian resistance group to the Nazi massacre of 560 Italian civilians.

The reporters who, for obvious reason, are outraged by the depiction feel that Lee misrepresented the facts surrounding the Nazi slaughter in the Tuscan village.  Lee has always contended that he set out to create a film that addressed the African American soldier’s experience in WWII and thus the flick is based on what he deemed factual accounts.

So the question is: was the scene inaccurate or more probable a piece of little known factual history that some Italians would like everyone to forget and bury thus fueling their outrage behind Lee’s exhuming account.

In a recent statement published in Variety however, McBride backpedaled and chose instead to cop pleas:

“This is a fictional story.  The real question for me was how to make ‘St. Anna’ a reveal, because that is the craft of fiction. I am very sorry if I have offended the partisans. I have enormous respect for them. As a black American, we understand what it’s like for someone to tell your history, and they are not you. But unfortunately, the history of World War II here in Italy is ours as well, and this was the best I could do.”

True to form however, my man Spike stood firm and defended the picture:

“I am not apologizing for anything. I think these questions are evidence that there is still a lot about your history during the war that you (Italians) have got to come to grips with.  This film is no clear picture of what happened. It is our interpretation, and I stand behind it.”

Why is it that us as African Americans have to always apologize for who we are? McBride I don’t know you or your work (I’ll Google you later if I feel like it) but your statement makes you sound like a p*ssy…MAN UP!  We as black folks/ minorities have been mal-treated, misrepresented, oppressed, under educated and deprived for hundreds of years.  In the past, no one has ever cared enough to record our history.  Those responsible for our set backs took their hall pass to the grave and now their ancestors get OUTRAGED by that fact that someone’s calling them on the bullsh*t their people pulled back in the day?  Don’t be apologetic…”That’s the best you could do.”  You sound like a house nigger right now man up you p*ssy.  Stand behind your film.  YOU WROTE IT!

I’ve seen the film. First let me say that it sucked. I pray that I will never have to see it again. When I was watching, one of the things I kept saying to myself was, “There is no way this is based off of factual events”. The movie is so fictional its damn near fantasy.

If anything Spike should apologize for releasing the film at all.

Well if Lee did not have a history of bashing and stereotyping Italians(like all Italian women are whores, men are all criminal violent gomba’s, etc) then legitimate questions would not arise about this movie. Or calling out Eastwood for not having Blacks in the two WW2 movies he did. (Surely he should have had black Japanese soldiers in ‘Letters’ or have the scene where white soldiers murder a Japanese prisoner be filmed with black soldiers instead of white ones. But he would still complain(not for outrage but for PR reasons).)

And If he wanted to show the untold history he should show the buffalo soldiers killing raping and removing Native Americans(my ancestors), just like the white soldiers did out west. That’s a untold story Lee afraid to show.(that is if he truly wants to show reality and not a personal political perspective) Or Spike Lee should redo old western movies and when they show Natives and Cowboys or solders fighting have Blacks correctly represented in those groups that raped murdered and removed the natives.

Spike with his history about Italians is the LAST person in Hollywood who should have done this movie.

Italian_Indian,
I feel you. I think there’s a couple things to keep in perspective. Spike doesn’t bash. He intentionally throws these stereotypes at us on screen to make us think. So you’re right about the fact that he’s going to be called to the carpet if he messes up Italian factual history.
I’m not sure if you’re a regular reader or not but I addressed the Spike/ Eastwood thing. Spike made those comments you’re right in the framework of promoting his “Miracle” film BUT it was in response to a question that was asked of him about his feelings on Eastwoods recent flicks.
Ultimately you’re right. We all as Americans have not done an adequate job representing the plight of American Indians HOWEVER I can’t seriously be mad at Spike for not doing so its not his responsibility just as it wasn’t Eastwood’s to take care of black folk. Thanks for the comments…I learned a lot.
