“?” of the Day: Should Jay-Z Hang Up The Mic?

Posted by Mike "Evorgleb" Belgrove

Whats left to acomplish? Isn’t it all downhill from here?

jayz2.jpg

It doesn’t seem like too long ago Jay-Z retired on the most perfect note with The Black Album. As many assumed he couldn’t leave rap alone (”the game needed him”) and returned and has since dropped two albums which both had a ton of hype but delivered lukewarm sales.

Now Jay-Z is set to release Blueprint 3, the 4th in the series (don’t forget Blueprint 2.5). The album is set to drop Dec. 2nd and will include “Jockin’ Jay-Z” and a new version of “Swagger Like Us” featurng Nas, Young Jeezy and Andre 3000.

All signs point to this being an epic album but chances are it will be luckluster like Kingdom Come and American Gangster. So the question has to be asked. Should Jay-Z just hang up the mic (again) and concentrate on his Roc brand or is he going to prove the nay sayers wrong?

nas on the swagga like us?…that should be hot, as for jay..i mean hes jay-z yo the dude from marcy projects.. we shouldn’t expect a reasonable doubt album but with his age and what he done for the game uhhh the answer is no..jay’s a smart dude he knows exactly what hes doing.

I think Jay-z has staying power. Although I am not a fan of Kingdom Come, I think maybe alot of the people who did not respond to American Gangster didn’t understand the concept behind it. First of, he modeled the album after the movie, and for many they could take or leave (most critics didn’t care for it). Although I don’t care for American Gangster, at least it delivered a theme, which I cannot say the same for Lil Wayne’s most recent album.

I’m quite excited about the new album and I’m not even that big of a fan, but he is one of the few artists that I can count on to make an album that is worth listening to.

i think he should keep rockin’ the mic… he has a passion for it…if hes not doing it for his fans, he’ll do it for himself.

i would do the same! im in the culinary industry and i would NEVER stop, even if some people didnt like my food… Just cuz someone doesnt like my product, doesnt mean i didnt put 100% into it!

He definitely should continue rapping. I feel that American Gangster was a very nice album. I mean it might have gotten “lukewarm” sales. But how many good rappers you know that get “lukewarm” sales. Talib Kweli, Blu, Little Brother, Mos Def, Common, and the list goes on and on.

If this was like 6 years ago, cats would make the arguement that his high record sales is the reason he should KEEP rhyming. His sales aint the problem. Quality is the issue, i know some of you might hate to hear that but its the truth. Jay-Z is the Dallas Cowboys of rap, he got a shitload of dough, all the pub, and all the flashing lights, but as far as music go we keep giving him excuses for not living up to the hype.

I think Jay should continue to Roc the Mic. Its amusing to me how most people think that if u dont do numbers by far as sales are concerned then the artist isnt good. To be honest most of these dudes thats droppin albums should do like Canibus said and drop the mic….they shouldnt be holdin it. The highest selling album this year was put out by a Gay Gremlin and his lyrics are WACK. So if anybody should give it up I think it should be these dudes thats getting credit for being hot and flooding the airwaves with GARBAGE!!!!!

Aight fuck it!!! I’ll say it!!!!!! He should stop. Yo Jay is a legend, but so many cats have taken bits and pieces from him that he is damn near errelivant. He is the cocky, slick talking, fire spitting MC; but its so many bozos doing that (or attempting)nowadays that it somewhat illegitimizes him. I like Jay, I like real MC’s, but I think Jay is a victom of his own appeal. Thanks Biters!!!!!!!! Jay should open a school for young artist, teach’em “HOW TO DO THIS SON!!!!!!!!”

Jay-Z should never hang it up. The guy has evolved to mean more to hip-hop than just another MC. He is iconic in status, and his voice is comparable to Warren Buffet — when Buffet speaks on stocks and markets. We dont only listen to Jay to here his latest lyrical composition; you also listen for the message. When Jay gives his opinion on the latest news involving hip-hop and its industry on his albums, he shakes or steers the industry on or off its tracks. We need him to continue to do the latter and answer “skinny jeans” and the Rev. Al when they creep into hip-hop; the former when introducing us to the Neptunes and Kanye. Like it or not, at the end of the day, when he finally hangs it up for good his influence on the industry will still be there until he is gone. So why not have his influence laid on the “next” producers track. And if you dont like it now, I’m sure you’ll appreciate it in ten years.

I agree that he is a icon, but everything comes to an end man. He will never be forgotten. Lately its been alot of hype surrounding his albums but they havent lived up to it. Jay fans will never want him to stop, but he will eventually leave the game.

No. He should rap until the day he dies, BUT he shouldn’t make a solo album anymore. He should do some remixes and rap on other people’s stuff and make EP’s if need be but he would really have to have something to say. NO FILLERS!!! He should be beyond a solo album with fillers. Good sh#t only!!!
