Run DMC Nominated for the 2009 Rock-And-Roll Hall of Fame Class
Why I believe Rap/ Hip Hop belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Well its about damn time! Run-DMC is one of nine finalists battling for five slots in the 2009 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Artists initially become eligible for the Hall 25 years after the release of their first musical release. Like in sports the honorees will be repped in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, Ohio with a plaque and exhibit.
Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell first formed the group in the 80’s. “Run-DMC is credited with setting the “template for modern hip-hop, from their everyday-teenager style to their blazing live shows to a catalogue of classic songs that few rappers have matched,” the Hall of Fame Foundation said in a statement.
So now the fate of Run DMC lies in the hands of 500 or so music industry professionals who will choose thus years inductees which will represent the the 24th such class on April 4 in Cleveland. The official announcement will be made in January. Keep your fingers crossed yall!
Other finalist include funk band War (think Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in “Rush Hour”, ) Doo-wop group Little Anthony and the Imperials, heavy metal band Metallica (a shoe-in), rock band The Stooges, guitarist Jeff Beck and singer Wanda Jackson.
Now while some of you are probably thinking why is it a big deal if Run DMC is represented in the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame its because its the benchmark for all music. Eventhough rock and roll was once considered a genre of music, from the museum and Hall of Fame perspective it represents a much broader honor. Last year we saw Grandmaster Flash and Furioius Five represent the first Hip Hop act to be inducted. We even interviewed Mele Mel to commemorate the importance. Run DMC just represents that natural evolution. They obviously were invaluable in the pioneering of Hip Hop but their colaboration with Aerosmith in “Walk This Way” was an important milestone in music history. They deserve it.
