Janet Jackson Decides To Leave Def Jam

Posted by Mike "Evorgleb" Belgrove

Janet bounces. Says she’s not too happy with how she was treated.

So I’m hearing that Janet Jackson is leaving Def Jam. Can’t say I’m surprised. Janet been jumping labels like crazy the last few years. This time around Janet asked for a release because she was generally unhappy with how her most recent album Discipline’s low sales. How low you ask? 415,000 copies. Didn’t even go gold, which is horrible for someone with the star power of Janet Jackson. Why the low sales? Well, Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo and The-Dream all lent production. Jermaine Dupri actually made the album a pet project. And usually an album Jermaine pays special attention to does very well. Just ask Usher and Mariah. Now one could say that the reason the album didn’t do well is because she didn’t have Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on board but I honestly doubt that what went wrong. Here’s what Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins had to say on the leave…

“We didn’t get the support from the record company.” “[Janet] felt like it wasn’t pushed. I felt like it wasn’t pushed correctly. She just didn’t get her just dues as an artist of that magnitude.”

I’ll be the first to say that the record labels have no idea what the hell they are doing these days and they likely didn’t give the project the proper push it needed but at the same time Janet Jackson is just…kinda old. Sex appeal has always been a main part of her appeal and she’s losing it. I’m not saying she’s not on point these days but seriously, who would you rather have fellas, Discipline Janet or Velvet Rope Janet?

For the record, Discipline was Janet’s best album in over a decade. Maybe 50 will sign her to G Unit or something.

UPDATE: Rap-Up got this video where Darkchild goes into further detail explaining what happened with Janet’s album. How but I didn’t know he wasn’t fat anymore.

This is a trend wit Def Jam. Everybody is saying the same thing. She should have got Jay on the album, then it would have got more pub. I think we need to get rid of all these lables and make more ways for artist to put out thier own shit. but everything cost money, distobution, producers, studio time, promotions, all that shit.

One of the reasons I feel Janet’s album was not as successful is that she changed her brand name. I first saw a single advertised on itunes, it just said Janet, not Janet Jackson and she didn’t look like herself. I didn’t recognize her or the music, thin vocals aside, there are alot of singers using the same producers, same vocal style and imagery. She allowed herself to be group with the singers she inspired, the Ashanti’s and not stand on her own as Janet!

Sorry Ms. Jackson but we didn’t know it was you til it was too late.
