Developing Movie Trend: Animated Documentaries

Posted by Juan

Absent the necessary footage to complete a traditional Documentary, new age directors…make it up.

Waltz With Bashir

A few weeks back I posted a trailer from a recent indie film called “Chicago 10” that mixed the elements of animation and documented footage to create an incredibly dramatic visual concoction that brought bring the infamous Chicago Conspiracy Trial following the protest of the 1968 Democratic Convention to life.

Like any good idea there of course are copycats.  This the second film in as many weeks that is being tagged as an animated documentary.  Its called “Waltz with Bashir” and is about Israeli soldiers dealing with some long-term effects stemming from their involvement in the first Lebanon War.  I wouldn’t expect it to be a film that a vast majority of the Nation would rush out to see however I mention it because of its artistic significance in what at least to me seems like a growing trend in film.

One Response to Developing Movie Trend: Animated Documentaries

  1. Tina says:

I’m still waiting on Chicago 10 through Netflix but I can’t wait to see it. I think that since the footage that was needed wasn’t avaialable it has broke open a new genre or subgroup of film. Though the two movies mentioned, Chicago 10 and Waltz and Bashir are the only two, I think that there will be much more to come. Though many people will not like the animated documentary, for its (possible) non-factual elements, I could see this type of documentary going somewhere if people really take notice.
